explain it

the goal should be to get better at baseball, learn the game, make friends and learn things like how to win and lose and handle situations including failure

which you absolutely get in travel and do not get in REC.

and he is right, if either is more american its certainly travel.

if your kid wants to play in college, the showcase/travel circuit is almost required after soph and junior year.

most people allow their kid to go on their own

How is rec that different in LA, that you don't learn these things there?

our community rec league is still thriving, luckily. I grew up playing Little League in the 90s, and while there isn't a sanctioned little league where I live as an adult, the rec league is still really good. The 5-6 yr old T-Ball/Coach Pitch hybrid league has 8 teams of 10 players. I ended up taking a team as head coach due to the lack of volunteers...we were told they would have to hvae 14 kids per team if 2 more teams weren't formed, so I stepped up.

I didn't get a chance to observe the "tryouts", so I went into the player draft blind other than the spreadsheet of ratings from the tryouts.

Of my 10 players, only 3 kids didn't have a first name ending in "-son" or "-on" lol. Jackson, Bryson, Grayson, Cameron, Jason, Mason, Rylon

because rec is a bunch of players who are not good for the most part. especially after age 10.

and i didnt say you dont learn those things in rec

but in rec, everyone gets a trophy, they dont keep score in half the leagues, everyone gets a juice box after...everyone gets to play and everyone has to play 1 inning in infield in many leagues. It everyone gets a trophy society.

What exactly is rec league?
Baton Rouge never really had a rec league, I’m with you there

Rec league is if you live in a certain area you are atomically allows to play for a playground team in your district

Unfortunately, the current rec ball team looks like this

3 kids that want to be there and can throw and catch
2 kids that want to be there that can’t throw and catch
1 or 2 kids that are autistic
3 kids that are miserable as shite, bad, and ruin it for everyone

That’s exactly what my team consisted of as I coached 7u rec baseball 2 years ago in mandeville

Solid flex. If your kid is a bully, you’re probably intellectually on par with trailer trash and sub 100 IQ drunks.

I’m not complaining because it’s what they love to do. As parents we want to fill those cups. It takes a great toll on family time.

I’m not complaining either. I’m happy that I can afford it, and I’m happy to have finally found good coaches for my kids after cycling through a few shady orgs with my oldest. I’d rather them do this than sit inside on video games all weekend. By my goodness … there has to be a better way.

Not true, there was American Legion.

Not sure if it’s a thing anymore, but American Legion was youth baseball in BR until the 1990s.

Well if it’s not it is more rec than travel/tournament ball.

You signed up, were put on a team that I didn’t go to school with any of the kids, all the teams wore the same uniforms(just different colors), we played our season had a closing tournament and that was it. If that’s not rec ball I don’t know what is.

Its the separation of rich and poor people.

There will be less travel ball players as expenses rise so enjoy it while you got it.

2 class society.

They have every way imaginable to drain those accounts so youll always depend on them.

not complaining...ill pay a lot of money to not have to deal with the dregs of society

go to some the "rec" and travel urban flag/tackle football and basketball games and tell me you wouldnt pay to not have to deal with it.

try people threatening to shoot you cause you are winning a 9/10 year old flag football game

you will change your mind about how "rec" is good after that.

the ones who only do it for their parents get weeded out pretty quickly. they fall behind because they dont love it and are not going to put in extra work.

I’m truly concerned how I see dads in bleachers for middle school ball where half the boys do not know how to throw a ball much less hit or run bases. Do rec league dads just neglect their kids? It’s embarrassing to see a 12-14 year old kid never get 1 hour with daddy to play catch and fix what would take an hour of time together. Pathetic parenting. Probably why they hate the idea of driving 25 minutes to 90% of ball games. Just have a dog if you don’t want to teach it anything.
