I brought up the need to power up the air separation plants on the state fuels call, as that’s what had refineries down following Gustav and Harvey, and it was like an epiphany. That is how much experience we’ve collectively lost.

A generator to run fridge, window unit, fan, lights is fine

Burning through 20-30 gallons of gas a day to run your whole house and do laundry is not

You just have to go further out. The stations on ambassador approaching 90 all had gas yesterday both times i passed.

Burned 5 gallons per day during Laura, started generator at 6pm and killed it when we woke up. There are a lot of soft hands in the affected area evidently.
Have offered to bring gas to several buddies in BR but none have needed it yet.

don what kind of generator do you have that uses only 5 gallons per day? We didn't need our portable this time BUT were discussing a whole house ... husband figured it's need 10 gallons per day for a generator for a 2300 sq ft house.

You were probably just running your fridge, couple window units, lights, fans etc. No way you were doing laundry on 5 gallons a day. Your stove and hot water heater are probably natural gas as well, electric versions would eat up big watts

I run straight 7am-7pm on a 5700watt generator. Window unit, freezer, and fridge.

So running about half load, it takes about 6gals.

Witnessed at the Murphy’s in Watson earlier this week:

Guy: I need $20 of premium
Clerk: We only have regular right now
Guy: But I need premium
Clerk: We only have regular
Guy: I really need premium
Clerk:

People are such idiots, especially when there’s a natural disaster. I guess he thought if he persisted she would go in the back and get him some premium from their secret stash

I bought a WEN Inverter 2250W generator (see a great thread on the Outdoor Board) and it was running my big fridge and a window AC 10 hours at night for way less than a gallon of gas. Full of great features, an Economy mode and pretty quiet. First pull start every time. Ran two freezers, two refrigerators and the AC (alternating) for 2 1/2 days and used 1 five gallon can total.

What the frick are you? The usage police? It's none of your business what people use their power from generators for.

And you're barking up the wrong tree. You're mad at the wrong people. You're mad at the victims. You need to be mad at the people who put us in this position where we have a shortage.

Why is it that we didn't face this problem as bad all during the Katrina/Rita, Gustav, etc rebuild periods?

Those are very gas friendly. My generator will easily eat 15 gallons in a 24 hour period only running fridges, window units, lamps, and electronics. No stove and no laundry.

Easily. 15 gallons may be a low estimate.
