Not only that, they flew in just minutes before knowing they were turning around.

Other planes had to turn back.

I don't think the storm clouds are very tall until you get closer to the cyclone eye-wall. A jet can easily climb above them in a dozen miles or so.

I've talked with an F.O. after landing during hurricane Cindy back in 05. I told him I would buy him a beer and he said the A flight attendant was picking up his tab that night lol.
