This BRPD officer-involved shooting is starting to get very interesting

To recap the case, on August 7th, a BRPD officer pulled over a car and claims to have been shot at, therefore returned fire. This is the same BRPD officer who pulled over a car on Acadian last year that ended end another officer-involved shooting.
In his first opportunity to use the new "quick review" policy for video of incidents, Paul chose not to release. A couple of days later, he admitted there was no video at all.
Now, Hillar Moore drops all charges against the suspect and Paul claims his guys are the ones who led the charge to do so.
Weird, weird stuff.
The Advocate
Either way, hopefully this results in Paul getting fired.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul said he plans to release on Wednesday the limited footage from the Aug. 7 officer-involved shooting in which police arrested a man for shooting at an officer, who then fired his weapon. A prosecutor said Tuesday there was not enough evidence to jail the man on an attempted murder accusation.
Paul said he plans to release audio captured by the police unit's rear camera and video recorded by a bystander. No video was captured by the officer's rear vehicle camera because it was facing down, and the officer's body camera and his vehicle's front dash camera were off during the incident, Paul said.

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore III said Tuesday that footage, along with other evidence, was key in his decision not to proceed with the case against Raheem Howard, 21. He said there was not sufficient evidence to prove that any other gun — beyond the officer's — was ever fired.
quote:
Paul said Tuesday his investigators led to Moore dropping the counts against Howard. The police chief said new evidence prompted investigators to meet with officials in the District Attorney's office. Paul declined to explain what that new evidence is, citing the ongoing investigation.
"Our police officers began that process," Paul said. "It’s important to understand, absent your articles in The Advocate or press conferences — that had absolutely no influence on our investigation. We were going to do that from day one."

Why have a body camera if it isn’t on? It should be the law that they HAVE to be on. It’s good for both the police and the general public.

Why would this result in Paul getting fired?

Chief Paul continues to amaze me with his bone-headed comments. I thought this guy was supposed to be politically / media savvy. Does he really think saying "what you did doesn't matter, we were going to do it all along" really helps the situation? It makes him sound like even MORE of an idiot.

It looks bad.
Old days you would have a bullet in the vehicle or a casing laying around near the door of the person’s vehicle to prove that the person was shooting at you. They would have pictures and later on toward late 90’s and early 2000’s total station video showing where the casing was, car, officers vehicle in distance from casing, etc.
If his vehicle and body camera were not on or was on wink wink accidentally erased something fishey going on. The video camera would tell the story better than anything else.

There are very few local politicians in whom I have faith; Moore is one of them.

You would be wrong in that assumption

It’s not an assumption.
It’s based on a large body of evidence.

Hillar is one of the very few good guys in public service. Good family and good man.

Why do you say that? I know him personally (~30 yrs) and have worked with him professionally - he is a class act to me. What was your experience?

Pretty sure he's had two officer involved shootings and two times his video was off.

I think it’s comical that people think they should be on nonstop at all times no matter what.
I agree that on interaction with anyone that it should be on. The fact that this officer had another traffic stop resulting a shooting with no video is pretty bad and shouldn’t happen.
From what i first said though, no one in the public should have access to an officer using the restroom or bank PIN numbers, or a private conversation with their SO. There are just something’s that everyone does in their daily lives at work that should never be public knowledge regardless of what you do for a job.

Except there’s this part you’re missing
Things can go 0-100 quickly, and they shouldn’t have to worry about turning a camera on while possibly fighting for their lives
