I'd stay south east of Birmingham - Homewood, Vestavia, Hoover, Mountain Brook etc. Or maybe downtown.

If you’re just stopping to go to Atlanta, maybe somewhere east of it?

Leeds or trussville

Hilton Garden Inn in Trussville is the place. $117 a night, and right off the interstate on the other side of Birmingham. I've stayed there several times on trips to TN, and have never been disappointed.

If your dead set on staying north of birmingham, plan on Gardendale or look North east to Trussville. As others mentioned, Hoover, would be my preferred option I think.

There are several hotels in Hoover, right off of I-459 before it reaches I-20 to Atlanta, then another grouping in Vestavia off of the exit for Hwy 280.

Exactly.

North Birmingham is New Orleans minus the Garden District.

Drury Inn off 465 and 280. Plenty of restaurants nearby. Easy access to interstate.

At least you're safe from high society meth addicts with diaper fetishes there.
