The inflexible mindset grated on my soul. Part of me loved every aspect of the Corps but there was often conflict with the free thinker and maverick side. And also intolerance to idiocy. It was a series of profound moments of introspection that resulted in me not going career via OCS, PLC or JAG.

I personally hated safety standdowns

8-10 hours of death by power point covering things like suicide awareness, rape, ptsd and how to handle it, etc

It was like waterboarding for the mind.

I hated the first time A-gang fricked up a valve lineup and blew shite into the galley on the sub. Then it happened 3 more times over 4 years.

When we fricked up a valve lineup in the nuclear world people’s heads rolled. For A-gang it was just another day at work with them laughing while we ate PB&Js for 2 weeks.

That sounds a lot like how my career ended.

Made E-5 in at the end of my 4 years, and had an option to extend for another deployment, go to OCS, or just get out altogether.

I was so sick of the bullshite at that point that it made the most sense to get out. I still have conflict over whether it was the correct decision or not. There were times when I hated the Corps with every amount of my being, but there were times when I got to do some really really cool shite. I didn’t really realize at the time that I wouldn’t be able to do a lot of the stuff I did ever again. I can say that in the 8 years I’ve been out, I’ve not once worked with like-minded individuals the way I did then. I’ve done well in the civilian sector, but it’s been mostly a result of avoiding traditional office bullshite.

I’ve got a few friends that are at their 12 year mark right now who wish they would have gotten out. Some are happy they stayed in. A couple became officers. I’ve got friends who did 8 years just to be sure and then got the frick out. Got one buddy who got out of Recon, became a cop, said frick this and went back to Recon enlisted. It’s hard to tell what the right decision of it all was but that’s all part of it.

I wouldn't want to be forced to work with tough-talking assholes like this, with no option to quit.

Don't worry pussies like you wouldn't survive living with savages like infantry marines.

While you were being a pussy in the rear we were making the green grass grow.

When I was a 1SG before retiring, I hated red cycle details and EO/EEO crap. My job was to train killers, not have them pick up trash or hold hands. I was a tanker for over 20 years and my goal was a company of tankers that knew how to sling lead on a 72 ton killing machine.

Hey Skaggs, what unit are you with and where are you stationed?
He was very quiet about where he did all his killing. I only know of two Marine infantrymen on this site with time downrange that were in it, and they never talk the smack this guy does.

The best leader i ever had was a 1SG in 1/12 CAV at Ft Hood. When I became one, I did everything in my power to emulate him.

Word brother. I have a handful of officers I look up to and every time something good happens to me (promotion, graduation, command assignment, etc) I make sure to drop them a note and tell them thanks for being an inspiration to me. For setting the standard.
