There is a Childrens Museum downtown that is nice. I always like to catch a lookouts baseball game when I am up there. Across the river Coolidge park is fun to hang out in and they have bike rentals.

When I first read this I thought you meant that the Zoo specialized in dwarf varieties of animals.

Do not do the incline railway. Repeat do not do the incline railway. I have lived in Chatt for 5 years, worst thing I ever did was wait in the June heat for over an hour to go up that thing and I was beyond disappointed. Chattanooga has tons of better things to do, some listed above. Downtown offers tons of local places to eat and drink. The aquarium is great. Lookouts games are fun. Do some research on hiking because there are lots of beautiful trails and water holes. You can drive up to the Ocoee and white water raft. Pretty much anything you want to do outsidoors chattanooga offers it.

The 8yo would probably enjoy Rock City. We took a trip there in the fall when my daughter was 4 and that was the highlight of the trip. We stayed at the Choo Choo, so she enjoyed seeing all the old trains. There's some train ride down by the river you can take them on. More of a sightseeing thing. I'm not sure if they still do it, or if it is just a fall thing, but I remember seeing brochures for it at the hotel.

Lookouts stadium is nice. Take the family to a game if they're home that week since you'll be there a week. I wouldn't try to pack that into a weekend trip but a mid-afternoon or evening game would be fun. See if they have any special nights. At the Barons games they do Thirsty Thursdays where beer is like $1-2 depending on the beer. I'm going tonight, and I'm not sure what the prices are. I know it was $2 for Good People last year, and I think it was $1 for the cheap stuff like Bud Light.

The Aquarium was really nice. That whole area down by the river is neat. I think the Moon Pie place is nearby. They have a little storefront that we went in, but I think they do factory tours. Again, the 8yo would probably enjoy this much more, but if it is cheap or free and will kill a couple of hours it might be fun for the family if you end up with a rainy day.

Coolidge park, kinda funky magazine street vibe in area. Sticky fingers BBQ was good. The lost sea was cool, about 1 hour or so away. It's a cave. Incline railway to me sucked! Rock city ( swing bridge ), kids will love. Really nice area, go to their site and order a travel guide.

Aquarium is a must. I was really impressed with it. Besides that and what others posted, if you have the time, research Little Canyon National Preserve. It's about a 45 minute drive south from Chattanooga. Great hiking and scenery. If you head that way, go to Mentone and eat at the Wildflower Café.

Note: I would skip Ruby Falls and do Rock City instead.
