I don't care how much protective gear you give me, I'll never go there. Not even fly over it with a helicopter I don't think.

The new dome will also have supports for overhead crane equipment to aid in the dismantling of the old sarcophagus.

Of course, there are also areas that are not safe.
Some areas in the old USSR are probably worse, like Norilsk and the old nuclear weapons testing range they had in Kazhakstan. LINK

I saw a 60 minutes or show a while back where there are people who have moved back to that area and have been living there for a few years now.

Well the Chernobyl power plant continued to operate reactors 1-3 until 2000 (reactor 4 was the one that melted down, 5 was under construction)... so obviously after the initial disaster and radioactive plume, everything outside of the sarcophagus was relatively safe.

Yea one show talked about the red Forest around the place. Problem is nothing decays due to no organisms. Leaving piled of radioactive leaves and dried trees..

It is not that bad, there are regular tours to the area. There are small hotspots on the ground from particles of reactor fuel, the contaminated construction equipment is the largest source of radiation around the site. The tour operators carry rad meters and monitor the areas you walk through, and everyone gets there shoes checked before leaving to ensure you did not pick up any hot particles in the dirt. I hope to take the tour, I have a friend in the Ukraine that I plan to visit in the future.
