Police are on the hunt for the people behind a “dime and dash” theft in northeast Philadelphia.

At around 6 a.m. Thursday, thieves broke into an unmarked trailer left in a Walmart parking lot, the Philadelphia Police Department told CNN, and made off with about 2 million dimes.

The trailer was carrying an estimated $750,000 in dimes, and the thieves were able to steal approximately $200,000 worth of the load, police said.

Dimes were scattered across the parking lot and the main road nearby.

Got to give them credit for being creative.

The small space needed to house a buttload of coins is surprising.
When my mom passed, we found numerous gallon jugs of coins stashed away in the backs of closets.
When all was said and done it was over 10k in coins, and that included a bunch of pennies.
If they are smart about cashing them in, they just might get away with it.
Doubtful they are smart enough.

Didn't read article, but why would someone abandon a trailer of $750,000 contents in a walmart parking lot?

This sounds like an inside job.

If I had a dime for every time someone called me handsome, I’d have about the same number of dimes that they stole.

10,000 pounds of dimes doesn't seem likely

All I can think about is the fun I'd have firing up YouTube, dragging out the magnifying glasses, and checking for rare errors. It would take a long while, but I'd get through them.

Your idea of fun and my idea of fun are just a tiny bit different. I assume you’re a coin collector?

Nah. I can just get really fixated on something. Completing the task is all that matters. The hunt is okay, and if you find something cool it pays off. I'd just like to know what is in there, and there's only one way to find out.

I can't even start to imagine how much space $200K in dimes would take up, OR THE WIEGHT!

Growing up I knew an old man who started a laundromat. He didn't really need the money, hell he was loaded to start with. He opened the first one, and then opened four more.

He'd get the coins out a couple times a week, and for whatever reason he didn't deposit them in the bank. He had an old deep freezer that didn't work in his house, in kind of like a mudroom type deal. It was a whopper of a deep freezer. He'd dump the coins into it every time he'd empty the machines. It was a pier and beam house. The damn thing got so heavy that it collapsed the floor. He had a crew come in and seal around the freezer and fix the floor. That left the lid and a small part of the freezer above floor level. He just kept dumping coins in.

I have no idea how much was in there when his kids inherited his joint. There's no telling.
