Welcome to sales. The real test is to see if you can build value in your price or have the patience for the idiot buyer who doesn't know you can get it for cheaper.
If you don't want people asking just add price firm.

I hate dealing with the used car/boat dealers that message you saying they have cash and can be there in 1 hr if you'll take X which is half of blue book.
I get that they are trying to take advantage of that 1:100 that is in dire straights but I puss them off and tell them I'm sorry that they are poor and cannot afford my item

I'm surprised you haven't been in any shady situations but even if not it seems prudent to carry just in case.
Had a buddy that just got scammed for $30k selling a car on eBay. Buyer used a falsified cashier's check that actually cleared his account and then was clawed back 6 days later by the bank. Can't even trust a cashier's check these days.

I sold an antique armoire that was hand painted by a local artist with animals, boats and airplanes for a boy's room or nursery. This lady offers me 20% less than asking, and I tell her I'd take it.
A day or so later my wife sees our armoire on her facebook feed being offered by this girl she knows for 50% more than our asking price. She hasn't even bought it from us yet. I laughed, my wife was mad.
In the end another woman swooped in and paid full price before the facebook girl. I told my wife she should facebook the other girl and ask to buy it at the higher price and let's laugh at what happened next. She didn't.

quote:This. They have some idea of what it might be worth and will jack up the price on the expectation of a higher counter. In reality, if someone is putting something on CL you can be pretty sure that irrespective of its objective value, it's worth practically nothing to them. You can get some great deals on used furniture and other shite that takes up a lot of space that people just want to get rid of once they're ready to get something new. Bought my first living room set 10 years ago for a hundred bucks from a young couple who were upgrading. It's still in good shape. Well good enough for a bachelor's basement, anyway.
I talked a guy selling an unused racing helmet down from 50 to 15 bucks a few months ago. You never know when someone is just looking to purge shite.

Last year a guy from a local chevy dealer mailed me a letter stating that they had a customer who wanted my make and model (04 Tahoe Z71; black, of course) and they were prepared to make me a handsome offer so they could sell it to the other guy. I was just in there about 2 months before getting a coolant line fixed, so I figured a customer asked them to find a z71 in my body style so they checked their service records and saw that I had one.
Wasn't really interested in selling, but I wanted to hear their offer. Called the number, and the guy who supposedly wrote me the letter was like "Oh yea, if you'd like to bring it in we can put you in a new chevy and I'll try to get you a good deal on the trade in." At that point I realized that there was no customer and there was no offer that had already been prepared. Gave him a few choices words before hanging up.

Yeah I've done that. Doesn't seem to help much. The morons still come out to play.

My college roommate bought a car off of Ebay and drove down to Miami to pick it up (should have been his first clue). As they are driving back, the get pulled over by Florida State Patrol because they do not have temporary Florida plates. FSP goes over the car with a fine tooth comb and turns and that the engine and transmission come up stolen. He was taken to the jail for questioning and let go because he had purchased the car from a guy who basically flipped it to him. The car sat in the impound lot for 6 months and no one ever came forward to claim the parts so he was able to retrieve the car. He finally gets it back to Georgia and get pulled over for a window tint violation which he had removed, but the clerk of the court never removed the ticket. Sheriffs deputy shows up with a bench warrant but luckily he kept all the paperwork and the matter was cleared up. He sold the cursed car the next week.

it was some 19 year old kid. I had it listed at $7500 and sold it in 2 days. he was willing to pay 7500 until his brother asked if he was ok with the price. the kid then shyly asked if i could do 7000. i was dancing inside.
