Lol, exactly. Either he’s admitting he’s a heartless jerk.. or he’s making statements he can’t possibly know the answer to.

I appreciate beyond words what my parents have done for me. For someone to assume they wouldn’t? Man you must be a dick.

Maybe if you majored in Finance when you went to college, you would've learned how to pay for your retirement as well as your kids educations well before you even had kids.....

Your argument is based on a false premise that kids who don't pay for college on their own don't learn personal responsibility. If that's what it takes for your kid to learn personal responsibility, you failed as a parent from age 3-18.

That might be a bit extreme, but you unequivocally work harder when you've got more skin in the game.

I think a better statement is that you unequivocally work harder when you know that your future depends on it...regardless of who foots the bill.

How is that a better statement? Plenty of kids dick around in college.

I would bet that the same number of kids flame out in college while paying their own way as do when it's paid for.

I'd take that bet.

A new national study has found that the more money parents pay for their kids’ college educations, the worse their kids tend to perform, at least when it comes to grades.

I guess I’m just confused to how your parents paying your tuition means you don’t have skin in the game. Paying my tuition was great but I’ve had a job since I was 15 because rent and groceries and bills and anything I would want for myself doesn’t just magically appear.

And regardless of that, when I graduated college, everything was still my responsibility to be paid for. My parents paying my tuition had nothing to do with any of that except for the fact that it kept me from starting out in debt. I still have skin in the game. Not paying my rent still would mean evection. I guess I just don’t see what tuition has to do with that

Edit: oh you meant grades and doing well in college

I Find of that has more to do with personality and maturity and age than anything else

Did your parents pay for your college? If they did this makes you and your wife huge assholes.

"The U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard tracks the number of students who dropped out with debt for each college and university in the nation...a total of 3.9 million undergraduates with federal student loan debt dropped out during fiscal years 2015 and 2016 (from mid-2014 through mid-2016)."

I love numbers with zero context.

You people criticizing the OP must be some motherfricking ballers and come from Blue Blood Silver Spoon families.

Nobody on my mom's side went to college and everybody on my dad's side that went to college paid for themselves including me. What's wrong with making your kids get a loan, go to college, go to work and then pay off the loan?

You raise your kids to teach them to be responsible adults, what kind of message do you send when you pay their way for everything without making them work for it?

Boomers wonder why millennials are selfish and think they are owed everything without having to work for it. It's Boomers that created this generation. They weren't raised in a vacuum.

And despite their lower grades, the graduation rate for students whose parents paid their full freight was higher than for those whose parents didn’t. That’s not surprising, since many students leave college for financial reasons.

Oh, then maybe you should sharpen it. What is your point, if you can state it explicitly please.

You're confusing yourself.

quote:

Graduating debt free with a basket weaving degree isn't going to be worth much.

So I simply pointed out that a basket weaving degree with 60K debt is worth even less. Seems like an appropriate response

So then you say:

quote:

Personal responsibility is a much bigger contribution.

So, if you have a responsible kid then you've done your job?

Personal responsibility is a great virtue to instill in your children. But a responsible college graduate with debt is still disadvantaged compared to an irresponsible debt-free graduate. I'll be sure to tell my kids that they need to mention their impeccable personal responsibility when the mortgage lender points out their negative net worth.

No need to.

No I'm not. You said the most beneficial thing a parent could do is pay for their college. That's just false.

No point in carrying this further.

My wife's parents paid for her older brother for 5 years to dick off at school. They finally cut him off and he took 18 hours 2 semesters in a row and graduated. He took on some debt to do so. My FIL is very well off. Is he a bad parent? I say no.
