Sounds like an extra source of income via rent money to me.

I made the decision to go to a "lesser" school because I didn't want to graduate with debt.

Pretty happy with that decision.

It's the way everyone should operate, but when money is flowing regardless, people don't care.

I graduated in 4 years because that's when TOPS and my scholarship ran out. My parents weren't going to spend a penny for another semester.

The military is always an option and an underrated one at that. It's a super solid career choice too.

I had many friends at Loyola and UNO back in that time. Most graduated on time. Just stop.

Of course, because your anecdotal evidence is law for everyone who attended UNO during Katrina

Start a 529 early for each kid and direct deposit some cash each month

If your retirement is so on the line that 10k a year for 4 years ruins it, Then you should have done better long before.

This is just false. It's not like you're paying for school today - it's 15-18 years down the road. Have you seen tuition projections?

Getting out of a state school for $40k is incredibly unlikely 15 years from now. I still think forcing your kids to make economical decisions is a good move, but the costs are getting out of hand.

You could have transferred to LSUS or Tech.

Your statement about being set back to 32 because of debt is disingenuous because you didn't start school till most people had already been graduated for several years.

Who says you can’t save adequately for retirement and put money away as well for the kids’ college?
this isn't easy for everyone.

Furthermore, if I were in a position where I could either put every extra penny in a college savings account (which may or may not be used) or a vacation savings account to make memories with my kids there wouldn't be any hesitation.

You only get a limited amount of time with your children. Enjoy it instead of sitting home doing nothing eating tuna casserole 5x a week while stressing how you are going to pay for the future.

There are many other means of assistance for funding college.

Katrina didn't hold you back from school for 3 plus years. Just stop.

My parents didnt pay for my school. It does kinda suck that education costs have been inflated so much though. Even if kids wanna go to a large public school they still will have quite a bit of debt.

It’s a great choice, I would tell them to do one active duty contract instead of reserve. Active duty pays for 100% of college tuition anywhere while reservist doesn’t pay near as much, obviously.

Several of my NOLA buddies went to LSU for a semester and then went back to their schools in NOLA. You just used Katrina as an excuse to take a break. It's fine, but don't try to make an unrelated argument about student debt out of it.

And this is why you boomers have no retirement. Y’all all wanna take vacations that the kid won’t even remember at the cost of them going to college

I'm sure it was a difficult time.

I think the overall point is that the fact that you were displaced for a few years set you back moreso than your debt

Your anecdotal 3 year postponement is definitely an outlier. Not the norm of Katrina kids. 05 was my freshman year of college, fwiw.

Man there are a bunch of entitled people here.

Should you try to help pay for college, sure. But it is not a requirement. Remember when you work for something you appreciate it more.

1. I'm 31
2. My kid was breastfed, he'll be fine
3. I want my kids to look back on their childhood and have good memories. I know what it's like on the other end.
