The watering-down of luxury sports car brands

On the surface you may not notice much of a difference between a BMW M sport and an M4. Same can be said for the various Audi S-package models, and various AMG models for Mercedes. But if you take a closer look you'll realize that the body styles, engines and interiors can be quite different, not to mention the price tags.
BMW
The BMW M Sport can be purchased for the 430i coupe (entry level) at $48k (starting price) with a 2.0 L 4-cylinder engine. The M4 however starts at $68k and usually ends up around $80k after adding some of the more popular options. The M4 has a 3.0 liter, inline 6-cylinder, twin turbo with 425 hp.
AMG
The Mercedes AMG C43 coupe (formerly the C450) has a 362 hp, 3.0L V6 and starts at $55k. The classic AMG C63S coupe starts at around $77k and usually ends up around $90k after adding some of the more popular options. The C63S has 505 hp and a bi-turbo, 4.0 L, V8.
Audi
The Audi A5 – Sport Package starts at around $50K. With the S5 starting at $55k and the RS5 at around $70k.
The prestige of driving an Audi RS model, a Mercedes AMG, or a BMW M, has been diluted with the introduction of new naming conventions aimed at convincing buyers that their vehicles are exclusive.
I'm not sure it will ultimately matter because the companies are still cranking out high-end models with impressive performance, they've just lowered the bar for what constitutes their idea of performance. Most buyers don't seem to mind that their BMW M Sport cars don't have M performance engines, or that C43 model AMGs aren't built in Affalterbach. But now the names aren't exactly as special as they once were, which is disappointing for car enthusiasts.

Ford is the only luxury brand the OT needs.

in the case of the bmw, i dont know who wants to spend $50k for a 2.0L 4 cylinder.
the 5 series is worse has the same engine in the 530, but has a 600hp v8 in the m5
i like the look of the a5. iwdi

I live in a pretty well to do area uptown Nola and I’m starting to see more Tesla’s from people previously owned BMW, Mercedes and Audi’s.

Your wall of text threads are as drawn out as your enchilada cooking demonstrations.

Not sure I really agree with this. It allows the manufactures to make money off the buyer that wants the sporty look put not all the performance hardware that previously were looking to the aftermarket for ground effects and other custom stuff. I think most aren't pretending that they have anything more special than what they actually have, and even if they are, who cares?

And none of them have the reliability rating of a Lexus.
I will wind up in the TT Supra MKV though. And before you make fun of that car, it has B58 parts.

Non-luxury brands feel like luxury now.

I think that's fair. It doesn't matter if they want to sport an M badge when it's not an M car. But I think it waters-down the brand appeal or prestige. For whatever that's worth.

Yep. You go fully loaded on some of the non-luxury vehicles out right now, and you're riding pretty plush.
LNCHBOX - I agree too. There was a thread a year or so ago asking why lower end brands don't make vehicles that are as aesthetically pleasing as a luxury vehicle but without the bells and whistles in the engine. I thought it was an interesting question. Some people, especially women, buy luxury vehicles for the interior amenities and exterior design.. not for the engine power.

What's wrong with broadening your appeal by offering lower priced alternatives?
If people didn't buy them they wouldn't build them.
