bet you money it's more like 55 knots or more, they ain't gonna put out that info and older carriers can do that

Yeah, these things can get up and go. We were hauling arse on our way back to the gulf to kick off Iraqi freedom (had to be at least 50+ knots) . And that was a carrier commissioned in the 80's

Still a lot of work left to do on it though. They rushed to get it out of the shipyard that a lot of the internals are still bare metal. Still has some mechanics to get worked out as well. Sitting next to the ship I work on, which is 40 years old, it looks phenomenal. Not to make mine sound bad, it's still fun as hell to drive as well. Too bad it won't see the Gulf until 2020. Next one will be named after JFK though

I can only assume a carrier would be faster.

thought subs on the surface were among the fastest in the fleet

I thought modern subs were faster submerged - did I misread something some time or another? Is there any class of sub that might be true?

Edit: looks like a couple of people with experience have confirmed - thanks.

I was told by a co-worker who was in the Navy that a carrier had to be able to put 50 knots worth of wind across the flight deck even in a dead calm for the fighter jets to be launched.

And lest we never forget when Norfolk had all 5 carriers in port at one time. Parking was atrocious and it took half a day just to get to work...

Oh lord no. Flight deck is off limits if wind speed gets to 35 knots across the deck. It doesn't take much headwind to launch planes. It's recovering them that requires a little more

And I would say a bare empty carrier with no jet fuel onboard MAY get to 50 knots, with a clean hull and screws, and in pretty cool, calm water. Most you'll normally get though is about 40 knots.

And a submarine is faster submerged

Looks like they made the bridge and control tower much smaller than other carriers.

I believe the circumstances are a bit better for defending the target now rather than 1941.

But I bet there are a few Fairey Swordfish's onboard.

10 min video about the ship details

The voice is annoying but they give some good numbers.

This carrier was named after U.S. Senator and MSU alum, John C Stennis.

How did a non electected Prez. get the most expensive ship named after them? My boy Gerry.
I guess every ship at the time is the most expensive.
The USS Hillary should be a trash barge by day and clandestine wet works at night.
