I learned from Star Trek that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

I would jump on the Trolley to make it to where I was going on time.

If you knew none of the people I would think saving 5 is more ethical

I am now taking that Harvard class via YouTube

In both cases I let it ride. The world is overpopulated enough as it is.

No one should have to die alone in a situation like this. I would pull the lever and then jump in front of the trolley with the lone individual. I wouldn't be able to live with myself anyway, so might as well die with them.

I would pull the lever halfway and hope the train derails because that's the only way to pick up that 7-10 split.

The trolley problem splits people into three different camps:
1. Utilitarian/Consequentialist ethicists who believe that is most ethical which causes the greatest good, on average. This group gets further broken down into dithering over who the people are on the tracks, whether a human life can be valued comparatively (incommensurability issues), etc.
2. Those that believe that they have no affirmative duty to act, and therefore by committing an (arguably) evil act, even if it means averting a more evil outcome, involves them in the evil itself.
3. Jackasses who try to subvert the thought experiment by adding nonsensical non-options to what is proposed as a rigid binary.

The problem with this is it assumes you have an omniscient point of view. You know all the variables and can quickly weigh all decisions.
