I went to a Rangers game last year and there was a family there with 3 boys probably aged 7, 9, and 11. They played on their iPads the entire time and didn't pay attention to the game. What the frick was the point of bringing them to a Rangers game?

When I was 9 we moved to a new neighborhood that had a lot of new houses being built. We spent endless hours just taking stuff from the construction sites and going out into the woods and building our own forts and treehouses with the materials we took.
We made bike ramps out of plywood
We played football in the street, tackle football with no pads at the park, basketball in the driveway, baseball in the backyard, street hockey
Other games like Jackpot, Smear the Queer
Rode our bikes everywhere. The day when riding your bike a mile to the store was a big deal.
Explored the local creeks and forests.
Outside all the time. Sure some of us had video games but they were more of a thing you played with after the sun went down.

I feel like we had the same childhood.
It is sad these days to drive though a large neighborhood on a nice day and not see one kid outside playing.

Think of all the times you were playing football or hockey in the street and had to get out of the way for a car.
Have you ever seen kids playing in the street having to get out of your way? I sure haven't in the 11 years I have been driving.

A guy I used to work with has a young son (little over a yer old) and he's intentionally avoided letting him see ipads, devices, etc. for as long as possible so that he knows of a world outside of all that.
You shouldn't feel bad about telling people how shitty they are for using devices to appease their kids, or as a lazy, pathetic substitute for being a good parent. We are losing what it means to be human.

I think its only a problem if that's all a kid is doing. My nephew is on his ipad all the time but he's also very active in sports and other shite, way more than I ever was.

My parents didn't let me have video games when I grew up. I had a Game Boy and that was it. I was an outside person all the way.
I remember when Pokémon came out and that's when I really became a Game Boy zombie, but my parents made sure it didn't consume me. However, since everyone else in the neighborhood also had Pokémon, we would ride our bikes to each others houses to trade. At least we went outside to trade Pokémon, these days you just hop on the internet to play video games with your friends and don't have to leave the house.
My first video game system was when I turned 16 and my parents let me buy a Game Cube with my own money.
I am glad they did it this way.

My grand dad would always say the "back in my day" crowd had no clue what they were saying. Sure pants lasted longer, but you had to spend two weeks of checks to afford them. Enjoy the now.

Each generation is growing more narcissistic. It's almost impossible not to be. And yes we are missing out on things, all of us regardless of age, by constantly having our face in a device.
Of course every generation complains about the one behind it but this is a multi generational issue. I've found that leaving the phone behind at sporting events concerts etc is liberating in a way. Also putting it in the glove box while driving.

I sit around and play xbox on most weekends and my wife is always looking at her phone. How can I tell my daughter to put down her tablet and go play outside when we are doing the exact same things. I get what you are saying though. As a kid we played outside all day, then video games happened, and we were all huddled around the tv. Times change.

I've got a Great-Nephew and a Great-Niece,both younger than 10.
My Nephew is content to play games on a Pad or my Laptop all day.He wants me to watch though.
My Niece,who is younger,wants to play outside.Catch turtles,crawfish,etc..
I definitely get how it's easier on the Parent or Guardian if they're watching cartoons or playing computer games.
But it's refreshing to see a kid that wants to stay outside.

You realize the chief complaint when games like this were played by kids was that "back in my day" kid's toiled on the farm or worked to help support the family?

In m neighborhood kids are always outdide playing, have to drag my seven year old back in. Maybe it's a city kid against suburb kid thing,
