I would go out and knock on doors and by the fifth house, I'd be with like 5-) kids and we'd be outside ALL GOD DAMNED DAY... We'd check in at someone's house for lunch... Their mom would make us call our moms and let them know we we were ok and back at it.

I'm sure there were children in each generation that did not soak up all the 'good' values that you are referring to in your post.
Although it seems like this newest generation is lacking in these characteristics due to technology, there are still plenty of kids these days that still enjoy the activities that you speak of. The advancement of technology has surely meant less outdoor activities, but I believe it has also brought a lot of good to children as well such as quicker mental development and education. There is also a lot of good that has come from all of this.
ETA: Get off my lawn!!

My son has my old Sony flat tube TV, it's HD, in his sun room for the Xbox 360. Yesterday the menu from the TV was on the screen. I told him he had to 'hit menu on the TV'...yep, he presses on the screen where menu is.
