My experiences with frats have been overwhelmingly negative. For years my job required me to work fraternity/sorority functions. I saw urinals and sinks pulled from the walls at hotels and furniture tossed from a paddle wheel river boat. Watched way too many young men puking their guts out post party and just never got the feeling that the groups I was around were anything I would want my son associated with.

That being said, I'm sure there are fraternities that steer clear of this type of behavior?

You have to give me more credit than that lame bullshite . I'm not talking about the " acceptable risk" of every day life I'm talking about the " arbitrary persecution " of School administrators/ professors etc . Many whom can choose to punish members of an organization who have absolutely nothing to do with any violation or occurrence. Wearing that fraternity jersey may be like waving the red flag in front of the bull - they can screw with you and you have no redress. I saw it in the 1980s , I can only imagine how bad it is now.

I'm not bitching . I'm asking a legitimate question and I'm doing it in a respectful and honest manner . If you don't like the topic just go to another thread.

with the exception of that, you just described Kirby Smith, or any of thousands of dorms around the country

You acknowledge the point yet still miss it - life is full of risk and reward. Do the rewards outweigh the risks? In most cases, unless it's some barbarian academy frat, the answer is yes.

I disagree. The risk outweighs the reward. Taking into account that that varies from Institution to Institution.

Sure, but you act like the success stories aren't possible without the risk. You don't need to be in a fraternity to leave college as a success story.

The point of the thread is whether or not fraternities present any value anymore.

Maybe raise junior to not be an entitled douche bag prick who is going to force some kid to drink himself into unconsciousness/coma/death. I don't blame frats. I blame shitty parents.

of course they do. i don't see how anyone could possibly think otherwise.

because some professors and administrators have a hard on for them? spare me that BS. it's not like your letters next to your name on the class roster. and as long as you don't frick up big time as an individual (ie pushing someone down two flights of stairs), you will be fine.

What value do they provide that you cannot get outside of the frat?

Havoc - full disclosure- at 10 am today I had a discussion with my fraternity little brother . He's a fricking Prince. Anyhow his son just started at a PAC 10 school and he was drummed out of his fraternity ( legacy) for the sin of " drunken cultural appropriation " for an offense too pedestrian to even give a single frick about. Apparently he's not supposed to sing the lyrics out loud in front of the black fraternity member.

This spurred a conversation about frats losing their way and betraying their mission to build strong and ethical men and prepare them for success in this current batshit crazy culture. And then hours later - this news at LSU . Against the backdrop of my daughter being a freshman at LSU and talking a lot about the pros and cons of Greek life.

One of my sons, we just moved in to the UL dorm. Computer science major. Introvert. Non-drinker. All that.

My younger son is a junior in high school, super social, already plays beer pong with fruit juice (instead of beer).

I don't know which direction he is gonna go.

Tonight he was asking about this frat guy at LSU who died. I spent a few minutes explaining what Everclear 190 proof was, and what the various proofs are of what we drink, like beer is 8% by volume, and wine is 12% ABV and what all that means. And how it was idiotic and stupid that ACTIVES in today's environment permitted that to happen.

I'm not sure what I will do if and when that time comes next year. Part of this decision will depend on his athletic committment.

Is it a wise decision by a parent to allow and encourage your son to join a fraternity knowing that virtually every official entity and administrator on the entire campus is aligned against his fraternity? And they are almost certainly willing to deny him individual due process and judge him as a member of a group that they probably despise. And knowing that these same administrators give themselves wide latitude to judge and condemn these fraternities with the widest possible brush . It would seem like you are almost setting your kid up to be a victim of The bureaucratic academic mob .

Jesus Christ, self-persecution is a bitch.

The world is out to get frats!

For the right kind of person, all of these things - minus test banks - are available without belonging to a fraternity.

You can always tell the more cognitively- limited people by the level of hysteria (!!) they employ in building their Straw Men . That exclamation point gives you away, Nancy.

right now, with the push of a button, I could get out of any crime that you might think unimaginable, free medical treatment(from the best docs available,) that you might think of the same way, best insurance rates on anything, mortgage/loan rates, blah, blah, blah, and the list goes on, and all of this from great "friends"

been out of LSU for quite some time now
