Not sure if this is the right place to post this, or if it's been posted already, but with most of y'all being from Louisiana, I thought you might like this read. It's long, but worth it. This is a moving, difficult story about one man and the grip of drugs.

quote:

In 1990, a homeless man looked me in the eye and said, "You aught to do a story about me." I asked him why. "Because I've played in three Super Bowls." Now, finally, here's the entire story, 28 years in the making.

Read it this morning and thought it was a very moving piece. Wish Nola.com would stick to stuff like that instead of race baiting bullshite.

Wow, so sad. Thanks for sharing that.

If he’s ever found again and can get clean, he should probably get out of that town. Too many demons.

I saw that on NOLA this morning but didn't read it. Thank you for the attention you gave it. I am both glad and shattered to have read it.

He played for 5-6 years. Does this qualify him for a pension, as well as the concussion money settlement?

I don't know how long they have to play to get a pension.

Just don’t read anything written by Jarvis DeBerry and you will be fine with Nola.com.

The article said he does receive $680 a month pension from the NFL (IIRC the amount). Which is not enough for a room, but enough for a heck of a beginning of the month drug habbit.

I missed that part. There is ample information out there about the pensions from the 90's on, but little about the older guys.

I'm friendly with a former All Pro Punter from around the late 70s-80s..I know he gets more than $700/month.

Its based on longevity in the league and you have to play a few years before you're vested. Current players have a much better deal than the older guys.

I don't disagree. He's underpaid for his time with the NFL.

Currently, you need three "league years" to qualify for a minimum pension. I don't know what that equates to in dollars and cents. I believe a league year is defined as being on the 53 man game day roster for a minimum of five games (possibly seven games, but I think it's only five) in one season.

I'm positive that the more years you play, the more it's worth, as would be expected. I don't know if a guy who is on the game day roster for 16 games in a season gets more than the guy who was only on the roster for say 6 or 8 weeks.

Sports reporter Jimmy Smith, the author of the NFL series

I think Jimmy Smith is also "Jimmy Details". If so he used to post on recruiting board quite a bit.

Interesting story. Thanks for the link.

Edited to add - After reading and realizing the original story was written in 1990, I doubt it was "Jimmy Details". Still a very telling story about the constant struggle with addiction.

I just finished the article. As a recovering alcoholic knocking on the door of 12 years sober, this story is both familiar and haunting. I haven't been doing the things I used to take care of myself. This made me think I need a meeting.
