First of all, who drives from NY to SC on spring break all by themselves? With no friends? And not set to meet someone there? That's odd.
Then, it says the suspects "picked her up" and were "showing her off". Sounds like it started out as a voluntary thing. And then it got progressively more serious when they started passing her around and she realized she was in over her head.
When she started resisting, they wouldn't let her go. Once it became kidnapping and rape, they were looking at life in prison. No reason not to kill her.
That's how I read the story.
TLDR: the jungle is dangerous.

Don't really remember the story but I remember the picture now that I see it again. Sadly, stories like this happen every day and some of the unlucky ones get stuck in trafficking situations for the remainder of their lives
