Dude could have made millions upon millions more but he refused to commercialize his comic. They wanted to make cartoons, toys, stuffed animals, movies, etc.
He insisted on keeping his comic in its purest form, the comic strip. Pretty badass if you ask me. Also why people who stole his art and have the pissing Calvin on the back of their shitty truck look like even more of a douche.

The Far Side was (and still is) fricking hilarious, and blows out of the water pretty much every other strip in terms of pure humor.
But The Far Side lacked the deeper, thoughtful aspect that makes C&H the reigning king of comic strips.

He could’ve made more but was already really wealthy. At that point it’s better to preserve your work’s integrity than to get even richer imo. Thank god Calvin didn’t become a Garfield
