Think about it, the last new strip was in the mid 90s. Since then we've had the dot com bust, 9/11, the 2008 crash and the Obama presidency.

For the good of humanity we need more new Calvin and Hobbes.

And they’ve been exploring ever since.

Calvin doesn’t exist in the modern world. He was medicated up to the gills and given a screen. He sat inside all day.

If Bill Watterson came out of retirement that would be like MJ coming back to play basketball. But it could actually happen cause making comics is possible at age 59.

Bloom County has occasionally worked in some C&H references into the newer strips. Not the same but it's something.

Except the world has moved on.

Now he’d be called sexist, racist, etc. some offended little turdburgler would find some reason to bash him.

Don’t you see? Calvin doesn’t belong in this world. Calvin and Hobbes are a microcosm or the world in the decade before the internet. When we still played outside. Before the millennium.

Those were halcyon days.

A big reason Watterson gave it up was because he couldn't stand the daily demand of syndication. Hated having to fit everything into a box.

When he retired, I had hoped he would still do Calvin but just release books here and there at his leisure. Seems he's washed his hands of it all together.

Calvin and Hobbes was, no exaggeration, a work of artistic genius. In a way, I'm glad Watterson ended it the way he did everything else: on his own terms.

The strip wasn't just hilariously funny, it also taught values like taking care of the environment, the importance of friendship, anti-commercialism, using your imagination, and getting all the joy you can out of this short, uncertain thing we call life.

I still open up my old paperback copies of Essential, Authoritative, etc. from time to time and have a good laugh.

I think the world's problems may have more to do with people who give a shite about comics.

After reading his personal comments about his work and career, I got the feeling that he was a man who had done what he wanted to do, and knew when to stop. He wasn't going to keep C&H going for the sake of keeping it going.

Many producers of creative and artistic material should take note of that lesson. Far too many excellent creative endeavors end up getting watered-down because the creator simply doesn't want to shut down the stream of income it generates.

With Watterson, the integrity of his work ALWAYS came before money. That's why I respect the man greatly, and wish I could have a beer with him.

And for the record, on this lovely Friday morning:

Same here. Calvin's alter ego Spaceman Spiff was my favorite one of all. That and the snowmen

that strip where Calvin is doing homework and Hobbes becomes the stuffed tiger is one of the saddest things I've ever seen.

ETA: Here...not sure if it's genuine, but damn...

Watterson didn't draw that, but yeah, the message hits home regardless.

Well said. It was a true work of art and never will you read the strips and think “that’s dumb, or that’s a stale joke”. It was always new content.

One thing that’s really interesting as well, is that he wrote the strip from the ages of 27-37. That’s a pretty young age if you think about it
