The real purpose of a lock down

Reading about the California governor locking down again, it seems the concern isn’t over rising deaths or over-burdened hospitals, but simply rising cases. But wasn’t “flattening the curve” about spreading the number of positive cases (which will rise unavoidably) over a longer timeline... which is happening?
Is there some belief in the medical community now that if you lock down “well enough” that the virus will simply disappear? Because I don’t see any possible way to avoid the case numbers increasing when coming out of a lock down no matter how many times you do it or how stringently. The message seems to be “do it better this time.”
I don’t know, seems like an impossible goal to me.

Lots of feel good decisions.
Americans lack the capability of taking personal responsibility. There are plenty of resources at your disposal if you want to prevent yourself from getting sick.

The March/April shutdown was designed to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed and allow us to build up PPE and medical supplies.
The shutdown only prolongs the outbreak. The same number of people are infected with or without a shutdown.
The area under the curve is the same. Shutting down now when hospitals aren’t overwhelmed and we have supplies built up only prolongs our problem and is the worst move you could make.
Especially since cases are up due to a massive increase in testing and deaths are way down.

Agree with all of this but most that post here say no. They say "open it up" which, to them, actually means ignore it. There is no winning by ignoring it.

It's actually a reverse conspiracy. The real purpose of lockdowns was to militarize right-wing Republicans. Trump's playing 4D chess, using Russian and Chinese gambits, and even his own supporters don't get it.

No doubt.
People refuse to live healthy lifestyles. It’s not hard to eat healthy and dedicated 2 or 3 meals a week as a cheat meal.
Same thing with the BLM Movement and not taking personal responsibility for personal decisions and where they lead. Everyone wants the government to fox their problems instead of fixing it themselves
