Yea it's not a fun lifestyle.
My brother was a traveling welder and took a pay cut 12 years ago to become an operator just to be home because that lifestyle wasn't for him. He eventually got back to what he was making once he maxed out with annual raises. He's also a supervisor now so he does really well.
Yes, some welders make more than operators. Hard to believe I know.

Most welders and laborers are contract workers. They aren't all making that kind of money. The contract company they work for may be charging that much but they aren't paying the hands that much.
They do make a nice per diem though but the labor laws have really gotten tight on that as of late.
