I don't know about "most" but some certainly do and are better for it. Our culture certainly does not....we value youth and beauty almost as much as wealth and power. We warehouse old people and pay very little attention to their experience and wisdom unless they possess some wealth, power or both.

So there are these things in this country called nursing homes. Apparently you have been blessed in life to not have someone you care for in one of them. They are chock full of old people...they're even called old folks' homes. Your example of one person above the age of 80 who wasn't warehoused out of an estimated population of 13 million or so is what is known as the exception to the rule....it proves the fact that age is not revered and respected in the US, it is seen as a disability.
