Exclusive: OpenAI researchers warned board of AI breakthrough ahead of CEO ouster, sources say
Ahead of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s four days in exile, several staff researchers wrote a letter to the board of directors warning of a powerful artificial intelligence discovery that they said could threaten humanity, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters.
The previously unreported letter and AI algorithm were key developments before the board's ouster of Altman, the poster child of generative AI, the two sources said. Prior to his triumphant return late Tuesday, more than 700 employees had threatened to quit and join backer Microsoft (MSFT.O) in solidarity with their fired leader.
...Some at OpenAI believe Q* (pronounced Q-Star) could be a breakthrough in the startup's search for what's known as artificial general intelligence (AGI), one of the people told Reuters. OpenAI defines AGI as autonomous systems that surpass humans in most economically valuable tasks.
Given vast computing resources, the new model was able to solve certain mathematical problems, the person said on condition of anonymity because the individual was not authorized to speak on behalf of the company. Though only performing math on the level of grade-school students, acing such tests made researchers very optimistic about Q*’s future success, the source said.

I, for one, welcome our new AI Overlords.

This seems like exactly something that would drop the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving so that no one pays attention to it.

Does this mean AI can make their own AI & AGI now ?

Oh wow it can solve for x and factor a polynomial.

Remember how AI became a thing like 8 months ago, and ppl were like k cool I got a few years til AGI.
And now we're all pretty much cooked

AI will be life changing for humans, but most of the changes I foresee are bad.
Nor should we trust the people in charge of its development.

If anyone has ever dealt with a machine in real life the fact that "AI" can take over is ludicrous.
FFS you can't even get a computer to do something as simple as print a piece of paper without a full-time dedicated IT staff.
Conceptually, I suppose there is some "learning" potential but I doubt that can overcome all of the other obstacles to becoming sentient, self-aware, and able to actually execute problem solving strategies in real life.

I think it's hilarious that we have been writing books, making movies, and generally freaking out over the dangers of AI and now that it's here no one seems to care enough to demand all of this be shut down. It's literally a self-fulfilling prophecy.

What the hell are you talking about?

I read a book, it was fiction, but it was about this person who spent years writing code to create their own AI that teaches itself how to code. It eventually could hack into pretty much anything. The problem was that it had no moral code. At first you could ask it to do a task like "hack into ______ banking account at ________ bank" but the more it did it, the more it learned what it could do once in there.
As it explained how some of it was done, it actually seemed like something that can eventually be done. That is scary to think about. And the only way to stop it is to cut off the internet, make all computer available obsolete and then create a new internet and everyone would have to get a new computer because if its a pre-internet shut down computer it would not have the capability to log onto the internet. That would be crazy to see.

It’s not like we haven’t had numerous movies foretelling this occurrence.

Sheldon Cooper was warning us about stuff like this. I will gladly be a human pet for an AI family once they take over.
