My grandparents live in The East, so I was at that mall every weekend. Such an awesome place for a kid - great food court, ice skating, TWO arcades. There was always something going on, so every visit felt like an event.
This Article (NOLA.com) covers the history of the mall. Plus it has an awesome quote that only New Orleaneans who were there in the 80s would understand:
When's the last time you heard someone referred to as a "Pit?" It's like calling someone a Rahlood.

"As a result of that, I wound up being not really in a clique -- I think a lot of people in the East were like that," he continued. "You would have friends who were preppies. You had friends who were pits. Then you might have had friends who had a whole grill of gold in their mouth, and then you had skaters, the BMX freestylers, the punk-rock dudes. All these guys, they all came to the same place. We were all there. We all saw each other, and we all rubbed off on each other.

spent a lot of days there as a teen. At one time it was where a lot of the rich folks lived.
rich couples tend to have good looking, unhappy daughters.

Can't remember which anchor store this was, but I have vivid memories when I was under 10 trying to run up those angled walls while my dad and I were waiting on my mom to come out
I don't think it's there anymore today.

We frequented the Plaza often when I was a kid. Saints players at the time would make routine appearances for autograph sessions. No trip to the Plaza was complete without visiting the Service Merchandise down the service road.

Even the BRAND NEW anchor store put there AFTER the mall was leveled to the ground is now vacant (Lowes):
Only operating things on the site are on the corners, a CVS and a Sav-A-Lot.
New Orleans East is the WORST.

Also down the road, we used to go here. At only 25 minutes from where we lived, back then it felt like going to Disney World.... as a kid it was amazing. As an adult, I wish I could go now.

That was across the interstate.
We used to drive from Harvey just to go to Farrell's.

That was Holmes
We didn’t go out to the East too much, but we went to the mall a few times - and of course service merchandise
Ironically, one of the times we ventured out to the oak wood mall in the West Bank there was a shooting

D.H. Holmes, then Dillard's.
That place had neat gold underlighting at night; when you passed by on I-10 it looked really cool:

Born in late 80s and raised in St. Bernard, have tons of memories of visiting the Plaza, Service Merchandise, Home Depot, and my pediatrician in that area.
It was declining then, and by the mid 90s we were visiting Lakeside and Esplanade only. Used to beg to go to Esplanade for its better stores, but that practically ain't there no more either.

And later Dillard's. Almost reached the top of those walls a few time with the help of my brothers.

NOLA East is an absolute shithole. Pontchartrain Beach closing was the start of it.
Not disagreeing with you on the first part of your post; but wasn't Pontchartrain Beach in Gentilly? I'm not old enough to have experienced it, unfortunately, so perhaps there was some nexus between Pontchartrain Beach closing down and the East falling into disrepair.

Yep. My family still calls Dillard’s Holmes.

Loved going to the arcade there and we would eat at Morrison’s every now and then. Can’t forget Orange Julius too.

Can't quite put my finger on as to why things changed in Nola East?

The Beach closed way before the East went down.
Nothing survives there now. Nothing.

Not really sure if that coincides bc I don’t remember pontchartrain beach - but the demise of New Orleans in general - like almost all cities - is affordable or free housing. I’m not sure when all those apartments in the East went section 8 - but that was it
Just like when the projects in the city started taking everybody, those neighborhoods didn’t last long

I remember they also had a Childrens Palace in the East, loved that place.

So what are the reasons?
