I am in north Mississippi tonight and am in the flight path to Memphis airport. for about the last hour, I have seen jets landing around 45 seconds apart. I assume this is because they are a FedEx hub. With this quantity of aircraft coming in, I can't imagine how they handle taxiing, etc. on the ground at the airport.

Does anyone know more about this? It really is nothing short of amazing...

It used to be the busiest air traffic airport in the world until Delta ripped us a new a-hole and made all flights go through Atlanta.

I live near DFW Airport. Memphis has nothing on DFW. At night, it looks like two strands of pearls in the sky from the flights lined up in queue to land.

It's all FedEx.

Since Northwest merged with Delta seven years ago and Delta didn't need a hub at MEM, the passenger uplift out of MEM is down to nothing. The demographics of the flying public through MEM make it not real desirable for passenger airlines.

How is the weather looking?
Have you noticed any sudden changes?

You may need to put on a filter mask to protect yourself from the chemicals the planes spray.

that is similar to what I am looking at right now...got the curtains open and I'm kicked back sipping on a beer watching two strings of jets coming in no more than a minute apart. I can see at least 4 or 5 lined up in queue at all times!

I have watched this before and if I remember right, they all start streaming back out of here at about 4AM. must be a hell of clusterfrick of loading and unloading when all of these aircraft get on the ground.

really makes you appreciate all of what is in place to get your shite across the country overnight.

Man, that is a very cool illustration of what I am talking about. really is unbelieveable to me that there is just as much traffic looping around and coming in from the north side as well...

I don't find anything at all confusing about it...I am curious to know how the logistics work...

things like:

-how many aircraft come in/out

-how many trucks flow through to distribute all of this freight

-how many people are inside the terminals sorting the packages.

It's still one of the busiest freight airports in the world. Between 10pm and 3am, it's basically gridlock.

As a resident of Memphis, I can say those aren't passenger jets.

Yep, its still up there. I think Hong Kong may have surpassed it though in that as well.

Yep just checked, Memphis is #2 with Hong Kong #1.

It's cool stuff. They keep almost all that information locked down. I had to go on a hub tour when I started working at the hq. Tour started at midnight. The package sorting is mostly automated, but there are still so many people working there 24/7.
