Same, I'd have more money to do stuff but less time to do stuff. As a single guy I make enough to pretty much do what I want as long as I'm not over the top with it. I drive an affordable vehicle, live in affordable housing, and I'm able to hunt/fish/party enough to be satisfied. I'm by no means a baller but I can enjoy life.

Yep.
Don't be dependent on anyone or anything. Live so a job loss doesn't crush you.

While I've never had to take a pay cut, I have purposely sought out positions that provide a better work/life balance. It's still a struggle sometimes, but not as soul crushing as it is for some of my friends. They make more money than I do, but overall they seem pretty miserable.

also for those married couples trying to juggle 2 full time jobs with young kids
I know its not the most en vogue thing these days, but seriously consider one of you staying home
it really helps and removes a lot of stress for everyone

Jon, I have similar feelings about my job. I can’t really say that about my at home life.
Right now I am working a 8-12, 4-7:30 schedule. When my 12-4 break hits, I go home, eat, and pretty much sleep for an hour and a half. My break doesn’t really last until 4, because I have to leave to get there a little bit before.
I am constantly asked to have my students attend Saturday events and whatnot, basically to make our school look good. It’s no different than when I coached.
When all is said and done, I’ll give up 3 Saturdays in October, relegated to watching college football on my phone.
I’m tired of being outside in the heat during the summer. I’m tired of needing to take 3 showers a day just to feel fresh.

shite, I had to call a buddy yesterday to see if our company was still in business, I’m going to need some takeoffs and landings to stay legal if I don’t work soon(how does that work with you, btw? they don’t gaf?)

Need to do something about that job. Makes all the difference in the world. There really is only so many hours in a day. I hate that we work 5 days a week and the kids are in school 5 days a week. You really don't have that much time to spend with your kids in the grand scheme of which sucks. You only have the weekend. Thats why I cherish those week vacations with the kids. One of the many perks about my job is being able to take off whenever even if its just to spend a day with the family. It would take a serious 30%+ pay increase for me to even consider another job.

Wife isn't a teacher, but as of this week is working an 8-2 type schedule. Combined with my employer allowing for a flexible schedule...we should be good.

I think I overheard on the news last night that local school kids will only go to school M-Th this year. Now the stay at home moms will be bitching about one less day with Jody and one more with the kids.

This really is the reality of American life most people are faced with as they age and come to the realization of their life. You’re very far from being alone in this. Most people in this country live the exact same way. Work and getting ahead has taken on more importance than actually living life. It’s not that way everywhere in the world but it is here for sure. It drives us all. We work to retire in hopes of finally living our life the way we would like to, but what happens if we never get to that point, or if when we do, illness takes over and keeps us from living our life? That’s the sad part of all this shite.

I empathize. Really I do but only because i see so many live like this. Otherwise, i can't relate.
I'll bet my car isn't as nice as yours, my boat isn't as nice as yours (if you have one), my house isn't as nice as yours and my neighborhood isn't as nice as yours.
But i have two kids and my wife is a stay at home mom. My car is nice enough, my boat is nice enough, my house is nice enough, my neighbors are great and my life is elegantly simple. There's a price to pay for that elegance though. I for one am willing to pay it.
It sounds as though you should probably de-evolve some and want less. I find that people who feel the way you feel have a want for things they can't seem to fill.

I think this type of lifestyle is what often leads to divorce. People want their personal time back and want to have the sense that they are in control of their daily lives and aren’t simply just a cog in the machinery.
Well put and I feel your pain. Well actually, I understand where you're coming from but I'm single w/o kids. I basically do what I want, when i want everyday - except lunch with my family on most Sundays.

I couldn't be locked in an office 8-5 daily...did it once and hated it. For the past 10 years, I've been in outside sales and with a great company and love it. You get the opportunity to run around between calls and knock off grocery shopping and various other errands during the day which frees up my weekends even more.

I agree, but it is the reality.

Welcome to life. It doesn’t get any better short of hitting the lottery.
