Usually I say something like “No thank you, I’m not interested, have a good day” at the same time I’m closing the door. I’ve had more than a few solicitors standing on the porch and swearing at me behind a shut door.

Funny shite! Ive done that a couple of times in my life. God dang if you are a male or female make it obvious for christ sake. It does suck to hit a female with a Sir. If its a male who gives a frick you deserve it if you dont make it where 100% we all know what you are!!

I usually tell them up front that I'm not interested but if they want to waste their time to hear that after wasting their breath, I got time to waste.

I guess the day of neighborliness is out the window.
Bless you if you home has an attic or garage fire.

Now, when they push back, i point to the no solicitation sign and get a bit stronger worded.
Sometimes I feel the slightest bit sorry for DTD Salespeople, but if you have a clearly posted sign and they still knock, then they don't deserve an ounce of courtesy.
Its not the 60s anymore, people can easily shop for what they want without people interrupting their day with shite like this.
You are a better person than me.

Also had a relative got stabbed almost to death by answering a solicitor.
Was he selling Cutco?

My home is my sanctuary. I have a sign out front asking not to solicit at my home. You come to my home uninvited, disregard the sign, piss off the dogs, wake up the baby, we now have problems because your audacity to peddle your bullshite at my front door.
I understand it’s someone’s job, but they also need to understand why homeowners get short with them when they knock and ring the doorbell unsolicited.

Apologies. If you have signs then they should by all means respect it.
I shouldn't have attached this to you, but I personally hate to see the decline in people getting to know their neighbors. It crosses over into the thread on how kids could be left to roam the neighborhood untethered to play ball and have fun. Neighbors knew each other and watched out for each others kids and property for bad guys or fires, etc.
Again I apologize.

Now, when they push back,
Just tell them that no woman lives there. Women are the ones that they can convince them they're upgrading their safety (even though you already have an alarm) or keep a spider that only exists in Australia out of your house, unlike your self-spray job a la Home Depot.

No apologies needed, and I agree with you 100%. My current neighborhood is 180 from the one in my childhood, the community aspect is nonexistent now.
