How old is the house?
My dads house came with one and also perplexed us. House was built in the 40s I think

I had to put a deadbolt on the room my grandparents stayed in when they started losing their minds. My grandma learned how to pick the old lock after I reversed it and liked to go out at 3am and try doors to see if they were unlocked, then go inside and look for her mom.
After I got her the third time, I put a inside locking deadbolt in her room and both downstairs exterior doors.

But why a deadbolt? Just a knob lock would keep younguns out while youre balls deep
Was wondering the same. You can get an interior door knob with a key lock that serves the same purpose. Not the ones that you can pick with a coat hanger. I had to get one when I lived in a house with several guys and one of them liked to search for everyone's weed stash from time to time. We all changed the door knobs and that solved the issue. If someone really wanted in, a deadbolt doesn't add much security when it's a flimsy interior door. JMO

I had a house in college that was old and had dead bolts in a few doors, the house had settled so much that none of them worked

My wife and I inherited her grandmother's house. There was a deadbolt, slide lock and security chain on her bedroom door plus she had a pipe wedge that went from the knob to the floor. The old lady was paranoid someone would get in. Wish I would have taken a picture before I removed all that stuff.

Parents that have shitty grown kids that are hooked on drugs install a deadbolt to keep the kids from stealing their shite.
