The lost art of handwriting

Over the last couple of years, we've received "thank you" cards from graduating seniors. The addressed envelopes are an interesting sight. The address and return address are placed in crazy places and the handwriting is terrible. In the past, you could easily tell if the writing was a boy's or a girl's. Those days are long gone. They are all equally bad. Makes sense since everyone now either texts or types but still feels like you are getting correspondence from a serial killer when you open your mailbox.

This has been posted before, but it’s okay because it bears repeating.
I’m guilty of decaying handwriting quality myself, especially when juxtaposed against my high school handwriting.
My grandparents who were born 1911 & 1913 had the most beautiful handwriting…

Well coming from a guy who has been in the IT field for over 30 years my handwriting is horrific now and has been for years. Hell, I can't even write a paragraph without my hand hurting.
Now ask a someone under 25 to write a check!

i have always had terrible handwriting, but anyone can read what i write. my terrible is artwork compared to kids these days.
My 10 and 8 year old have horrible handwriting, bad enough that you can't even tell what letter it is half the time. I've complained about it to the teachers and to be honest i don't think they really care that much, and i don't really either to a certain degree.
What's weird is that both of them, and i've noticed it with their friends, they start every single letter from the bottom and go up. They write an S and start at the bottom. The write the number 9 and start from the bottom. That's not how i was taught to write, and the teachers basically said we let them do it how they want to.
I get the point that it doesn't really matter. Hell i say its a waste of time to teach simple math. Just learn how to use a calculator, or better yet, how to put the equation in excel or something. You're better off learning how to make the computer do 13x26 than you knowing how to write it all out.
But i would also say that kids need stricter structure, and should know how to follow simple directions. This is how you write the letter S. Follow the directions. The problem with young kids these days is they do what they feel like doing instead of following the rules, however insignificant you may think the rule is. It's a rule, so follow it. That starts early on in their upbringing.

My ability to write in cursive is almost gone because other than signing my name I haven't had to do so in over 40 years.

we recently received a thank you card from a recent high school graduate, and it looked like a 3 year old’s hand writing. And this kid has a full ride scholarship. I was surprised

Penmanship is dying in this country due to technology and the fact that it is rarely emphasized in schools. Spelling and grammar are not much better.

Like any skill, it atrophies without use. Handwriting has been diminishing in our society for quite awhile now, so poor handwriting should be expected.
I can still remember going back to school after summer vacation and my handwriting not being very good for the first few weeks of the new school year, simply because I hardly did it over the summer months.

My grandmother's, born 1919, recipe cards are a tour de force of immaculate penmanship.
My mother's handwriting is excellent as well. She credits the nuns and the corporal punishment they doled out for sloppy writing.

Yeah, having the fingers on your writing hand repeatedly broken could have an effect.

Who cares? It is a useless skill like knitting.

I’m surprised you’re even getting thank you cards! I haven’t received one in years.

I'm left-handed, so mine has never been good. I write notes without using cursive just so people can understand me. I can guarantee you these kids are writing one for the first time. They probably wanted to text everyone.
PS: Thank you notes are very underrated. People love getting them.

My wife made our kids write thank you notes.
Daughter does religiously, as does my wife. Son, ehhh when reminded 10Xs. Me, seldom.
