I'm pretty excited that they didn't accidentally open a black hole on earth.

Sorta messing with stuff that we can't handle

Completed (and they've upgraded since), but the LHC is one of if not the most complicated thing ever built. It wasn't built in a year.

Haha true, surprised colliding particles isn't more popular than it is over there in Alabama.

So, it confirmed the existence of the Higgs Boson? So what?

Nobody's given an actual benefit to society yet.

We figured out what causes mass. So what?

What did you think it was supposed to do? End world hunger?

The Higgs Boson means nothing. It was just a stupid chase much like drug addicts chasing the dragon. Nothing will come of it.

It would have been better to use the thing as a giant still and make quantum moonshine.

Read "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" and that will sum up the Governments involvement.

Some better perspective here is the following:

The Collider was built and accomplished a tremendous feat in physics (though I think it won't be of value later on) in less time than it takes the VA to build a medium sized outpatient clinic (see their efforts in Jax Florida).

Just one bust so far. It took a picture of some woman named Higgs' bosom.....

If you're actually asking this you're a dumbass (which I gathered from the evolution thread in Politics).

Expanding human insight into the fundamental principles of our physical world, how's that? If you are looking for something like Velcro or Tang, no it didn't do that (although I'm sure we've collectively gained a wealth of engineering knowledge building the thing).

In addition to the Higgs Boson, it has been utilized for hundreds of similar experiments.

Whether particle physics is actually worth the amount of money and time invested is a separate question, but the LHC is absolutely not a "bust".
