Interesting. The Romans had a nice run.

I know the Germans get such a bad rep but they were trying to do, minus the Jew thing, historically what everybody in Europe had been doing for the last 2,000 years.

Too bad it ends with a Muslim horde taking them over in the end
Posted on 3/16/18 at 8:49 am to ctiger69

Eh, Constantinople was sacked by the Latin Crusaders in 1204, and the Byzantines never really recovered, before being overrun by the Ottomans in 1453- which is mind boggling to think that it lasted almost all the way up to Columbus discovering the new world.
If youre referring to Western Roman Empire, they were sacked multiple times by the Goths, Vandals, Franks, etc, then reconquered by Justinian before giving up on what used to be the Roman Empire. The muslims didnt have much to do with them.
Eta: Constantinople was sacked in 1453, not 1457.

Not accurate. The US has militarily occupied Western Europe since 1945.

It's quite impressive how many "kingdoms" I have absolutely no clue ever existed, haha

At one point, the Vikings controlled all of Great Britain except for the small Kingdom of Wessex in the south. Can you imagine how different world history would be if Alfred the Great didn't hold out and begin the long resistance to make sure England survived and thrived?

But if I had been maybe we would have won

That's a very simplistic and narrow view of it. The Crusades essentially began as a result of the Byzantines begging for help against the spread of Islamic imperialism.
The sack of Constantinople by the Latin Crusaders does illustrate how off course the cause went, but suggesting that it was a case of Latin Crusaders just sacking the city is disingenuous at best. They were caught up in domestic strife within the Empire. One of the factions invited the sacking. The Crusaders didn't cause the weakening of the Eastern Empire. The Byzantine leadership was already doing a good job of that themselves.

Obviously thats a discussion up for debate. My point being that it wasnt until the 1280s that the Latins were expelled from Byzantium again, at which point the empire had weakened substantially.
It is true that the Alexios Angelos invited the 4th crusade to reinstall Alexios IV, but they had no interest in actually reinstalling him. Instead they divided up the empire and installed a Latin Patriarch to replace the greek orthodox one.
IIRC all the crusaders were subsequently excommunicated by the pope for the sack of constantinople.

They should put the Stars and Stripes over Europe in 1943-1991.
