Did you see my repsonse to you about welders and other craft along the gulf coast in the industrial market? Big difference between what they make vs what commercial trade guys make.
shite hole watches are making $17/hour for the safety companies, pretty much getting 40+ hours every week and will continue to do so for the next 3-5 years.
In the lake charles area, welders are making stupid money with the per fiem they are paying on the new projects. They are paying 120+ a day even if you are a local hand.
and you are not an outlier with your engineering degree. I know some that did well in school and didnt get jobs because they sucked at interviewing adn real world application, frankly they are just weirdos. I know some that are still looking for jobs 3+ years after graduating because they struggled in school and also have bad personalities.
Personality and leadership ability are the biggest items that will determine success in stem fields. That and the ability to translate things to the field using common/mechanical sense. I graduated with a pretty low GPA but make more than anybody i graduated with. I have a friend that is a mech at a local plant and is the same way. He didnt have great grades but has the ability to translate things to the field and now leads a division agter only 3 years. Every person under him is 40+ and has been at the plant for 10+ years.
In the end if you want to move up, you have to be a hustler. Doesn't matter what field you are in or your education level. If you are a hustler and never take no for an answer then you will succeed. I have friends that make way more than me that don't even have any college and its because they hustle 24/7 and do what ever it takes to get the job done.

Not even close in the south louisiana industrial market. Im talking in real dollars also. Everything related to the industrial market has exploded in the last 15 years. Even as bad as oil and gas is, those that are still working are making much better than in 1980 in terms of real dollars. Problem is most milleneals and people in general have way more day to day expenses. Things that are essential in todays work force like cell phone and internet add up. Throw in the cost of food and housing and you have people with more outflow than ever. ALso you have to look at life style in 1980 vs now, thats all its about.
I could live like somebody in 1980 plus cell phone, internet, and cable and be much much better off than them. But I liek being able to go to dinner when I want, travel when I want etc and so do most others my age and are willing to sacrifice to make it happen.

I understand a lot of welders (and other blue collar workers) can make a lot of money, but it's grossly exaggerated on TD. Look at any average and they make $17-25 an hour.
also, i'm not an engineer, but a lot of my friends are and it took some of them a few months to get a job. just like welders, on TD engineering is talked about like a golden ticket. clearly it is not.

Can't understand how the millineal generation holds guys like Elon Musk or Mark Cuban in such high esteem when they are the antithesis of whiny crybaby self pity. Guess I am millenial (30 year old). Not baller, 70k. I don't own a home. Why? Don't want one. I am comfortable in my small one bedroom where I have a good deal. I like being able to save 50% of my net every month. I view my apartment as simply a place I keep my stuff and sleep which is in a cool part of New Orleans. I understand I am not getting equity every month but I am ok with that. I am not interested in accumulating stuff, I like my freedom. i am also a pretty cheap person so I just sit back, save every month and let everyone else worry about keeping up with the Jonses

clearly you are not in South LA like many here are talking about. Industrial welders on average in the SW LA and SE TX are make twice what you are saying. hell look on indeed for welders in Lake Charles and you will see mutiple listing for combo welders for 36/hour. Call truner or wyatt and see how much they pay, its way way more than 17-25. Not trying to be mean but you are using the average across the US and trying to apply it to South LA where everyone else is talking about. Commercial trades don't make nearly what those in the plants make.

If your engineering buddies are in south LA then they have something wrong with them if they don't have mutiple offers if they are willing to work the industrial arena or for firms that work those areas. Design is always going to be up and down but other areas are booming and have been for years. If you have an outgoing personality, are willing to get your hands dirty and have mechanical sense than civil/mechanical/chemical engineering in the industrial arena is 100% a golden ticket.
TAlot of the OT also holds becoming a plant operator as a golden ticket, at least those that work in industry. Yet people continue to show up and poke fun of them and say other stupid shite all the while operators are pulling down 35-50 an hour in the SW LA and SE TX markets.

that's a part of what gets lost in these threads. everyone wants to make things personal or talk about their own experiences, but that's not what it's about.
it's about the issues facing an entire generation in our country and how we will face them.

Many on this board don't understand that plant life is for everyone. Maybe some people are set on living off the interest of their $10million inheritance and having an inside job making $50k a year. So many judgy people on this board...don't blame other posters blame your parents for not making millions.

Meanwhile having to pay double and triple for college, day care, housing, and cost living from what the baby boomers did. Ironically the only reason everything was so cheap was because of the war their fathers won for them.
Yet those same baby boomers feel the need to mock their childrens generation for having too many things given to them and then tell stories about how hard it was in the 70s and 80s.

That we can agree upon. Boomers aren't all bad, 50% or more are great. Its the ones that have gotten into control and those that continued to vote them in that suck. Worst generation ever in terms of running government
