i wonder how bad NOLA would have flooded with the same rain - that would overwhelm the pumps..

While certain parts of Nola certainly would have flooded, it wouldn't have been nearly as bad as what's happening in the BR area.

You would have had flooding on the scale of the May 95 floods - lots of flooding in the area of 1-2 feet inside homes, more the closer you are to a drainage canal.

Would not have been water to roofline type flooding.

Just wanted to let you all know I'm still here, some people wondered where I went. I fell down with an awful stomach bug a day ago and have been completely out of commission - it sucks too because I want to help people clean and recover.

Why is Bayou Fountain receding sooo much slower than any of the other creeks and bayous?
What is your guess on when everything starts receding to the Amite?

Y'all watching this Ascension/Iberville press conference? The guy talking about cutting the road kept using the word "controlled" when discussing their planned method and what it should do when draining. He really shouldn't use "controlled" when discussing something of this magnitude when it comes to natural forces. There's a reason why range and wildlife habitat folks went to using "prescribed burn" rather than "controlled burn" when setting fire for management reasons. Sets them up for backlash should something go not as planned.

Looks like Louisiana 511 has Hwy 22 open all the way to diversion canal. But the bridge closed. Unconfirmed reports the road is washed out on LP side? Anyone confirm?

Is that a funnel cloud? Doesn't really look like one.

I think they call that an inflow band. It's not a funnel cloud, but it could indicate that one may develop nearby.

Controlled event means when it deviates from the man made control it's an uncontrolled event.

Bottom line is that their is never anything in control when it comes to Mother Nature.

I'm not really sure about that. Here's the current flow rates of the pumping station(s) which are slated to get even higher next year.

The system's pumping capacity is over 29 billion gallons a day, enough to empty a lake 10 square miles by 13.5 feet deep every 24 hours. That flow rate (over 45,000 cubic feet per second) is more than the flow rate of the Ohio River, the nation's fifth largest river.

I just did some math, if the goal was to remove 24 inches of rainfall in 2 days, the system would be capable of handling 135 square miles of area. Which seems about right. The general consensus is that it can handle a half inch an hour for the entire city indefinitely. You'd need a tremendous spike of rainfall in a 2-3 hour period to accumulate enough water to cause structure flooding.

Need advicextra. Helping out a friend. Her children had all of their clothes flooded. I got them today and they obviously stink. What is the best way to clean them detergent wise..any other ways or additives? I appreciate the help.

Laundry tips after flood

I would recommend wash/disinfect with liquid lysol first and then wash with oxiclean. And then maybe follow up with regular detergent.

Yes, who in their right mind breaks a levee (the road) during a flood event. I wonder how the neighbors to the north in CCLA feel about a possible intentional levee break at their back door.
