Did they forget to hire an architect?

It makes sense. That was right around the time Chelsea's announced that they were closing. Then the news started to spread that Gov't street was going to see a lot of development in the near future. The first few tidbits I remember hearing were about a beer garden and Curbside opening.

If they’re not going to do anything different that makes it a real point of interest, like bad arse German food to go along with the beer and the ambiance, then it’s just going to be another place to drink a damn beer. I think the concept is cool, but once the novelty wears off, then what its going to offer people is the real thing that will determine if it’s desirable or just another passing fancy of Baton Rougeans.

Yeah but for those three weeks in the spring when it's not miserably hot and humid out, it will be magical.

two things... why the title? I don't know enough to know what a Government Street hater is. Is this some suburb vs. mid-city thing?

Also, I see it is planned for Government at Steele Blvd., so I am going to assume that is the southeast corner there. Which was the location of the old Lobianco's Grocery Store.

Wondering how many of y'all remember that place? I am 47, and I can recall going there on my bicycle in the late-1970s and early-1980s (growing up on Acadia St., 15 blocks to the east). It was definitely a neighborhood hangout back then, and probably for many decades prior. Mr. Lobianco had a 1930s or 1940s reach-in Coca Cola cooler, that kept the 6.5 oz. bottles perfectly cold for a summertime treat.

Anyway, if this is the location, then the history of locals mingling on that spot will go on...

Government St is on the come up on a serious note. Good for BR. The city needs good things to go it’s way for the people who live here.

Keep the negativity away.

Government Street Haters

I don't think people necessarily hate Government Street. It's more they recognize Baton Rouge as a whole is a Dumpster Fire.

Can someone explain to me exactly what the difference is between a beer garden and a regular bar?

Yes. Anytime somebody posts something positive about Government street the haters come out and act like it's some kind of murder infested shithole. As a 25 year resident of the area it pisses me off.

Yes, it's the old Lobianco's location.

They're also opening a new wine bar directly across the street right next to Roccas.

I like the gov street area the only thing that gets me is how close it is to the hood. Little too close for my liking. Besides that I love this area in town.

I believe the difference is that a beer garden is typically entirely outdoors, whereas a regular bar could have both indoor and outdoor space.

Example: The Bulldog is a regular bar with outdoor space. However, if The Bulldog only existed as that outdoor patio with the small bar that is outside, it would be a beer garden.

Beer gardens are typically associated with being an outdoor space, shared tables, and a large number of taps.

Who hates government street?

That area has tremendous potential. Mid city is actually turning out to be a pretty neat place.

There’s a beer garden in downtown Lafayette. It’s alright when the weather is nice. Super hipster though.

Hopefully they incorporate a roof and a few “big arse fans” considering Baton Rouge’s climate.

If Culinary Dropout has a massive outdoor space for games in Phoenix/Tempe that’s open in those dreadful summers, we could certainly do the same in Baton Rouge.
