BREC remains years behind on filing audits with the state and is on a “noncompliance list” with the state treasurer, which prohibits the organization from receiving state appropriations. The “designation of incompetence” has prevented BREC from receiving $679,000, and it’s also costing it federal funds, which are also frozen.[/The article in the we BRBR newsletter this morning points out just how flawed the way our parish works.

How is this allowed to stand?

BREC is spending $570,000 over a four-month window on TV ads

Someone should go to prison over this. Wasting tax dollars to con the public out of more tax dollars?

It should be with the amount of money they get. And they are sitting on excess money.

In any case, it doesn’t really matter. I would venture to guess that most of the library “visitors” probably just use the Libby app anyway.

The library and BREC are overfunded. Pretty much everything else is underfunded. If you complain about the library system or BREC you get them screaming about how you hate children and how they are so great and how Baton Rouge should be so lucky to have them.

They better be.

20% of my property taxes go to BREC and the parish library.

Eight years ago the COA asked for a seven million dollar property tax. It passed now they collect over ten million dollars in property taxes and are crying that that isn’t enough.

In 2016 EBR COA ran their operations on 3.6 million dollars. Most of those revenues were from operation grants and contributions. Their net position was (-221,760.00).

Flash forward to their most recent audit-22-23 and their total revenues are now 14.4 million dollars of which 10.7 million is property taxes. Their net position is now $11.7 million dollars.

Again, we want to care for the elderly, but how much is too much. In just eight years the COA has grown over 350%

Voting NO on every tax related issue this election. I don’t care who it is or what it benefits.

Not a regular golfer anymore, but played Beaver Creek several years ago and found the layout to be ordinary, but it was in excellent condition. I was impressed.
Santa Maria is a much better layout, but it wasn’t in the same shape BC was.
This is from a guy who grew up playing with wood woods at Webb.

Is it wrong to do that? I am cracking a joke here, but why does an entire group of people have to financially coddle about 12% of the population?
ETA: I am still taking about the children.

St George needs to allocate more funds to the gigantic wall we're going to have to build.

The strategy is to get it built right away and have BR pay for it.

For the last 20 years I've been beating a large drum about the waste that brec is. I saw it first hand.

When I spoke out against the huge sums of tax revenue and land holdings that brec has people looked at me like I was a leper with a STD.

From my understanding only our state legislature can only reign brec in. Please correct me if I am wrong because I'm about to beat on my state senator's door.

Ask most of their vendors, they can't pay their bills on time. It takes them the first 3-4 months of every year to figure out how to work their finance system again. It's been a revolving door of finance directors the last 12 years. Now Corey Wilson has hired his cousin as the latest CFO but somehow that's not nepotism??? As Rolfe stated, BREC only managed to actually get their 2021 audit filed this year because if not, the state could have taken over their finances. They still haven't completed 2022 or 2023 audits and we are a few months from 2025.

They actually had to postpone their accreditation process because they can't be re-accredited as a parks system without a current audit. They've gone from award winning to not even being able to get accredited in a matter of 3 years?

They have at least 3 buildings that are practically on the verge of falling apart because termites have torn them to shreds. Ask them why Flanacher Road Park's recreation center is closed. And sometimes they even tear down playground ACCIDENTALLY and only rebuild when the public throws a fit.

And based on what Rolfe said in his article, they are being investigated for lying about the existence of what should have been public records. If they would hide something as frivolous as text comments about an opinion article, who knows what other backdoor deals are happening?

They are wasting your tax dollars just like the COA. People are leaving there in huge swaths because they see the writing on the wall or they are just tired of being treated like dirt. The number of high level positions recently left is crazy.

And their chief legal officer is in with Ted James so I'm sure if he gets elected, they will be especially untouchable!

I thought this post was going to be about how parish and city should be governed separately. I come in to find yall crying about the two thing that are done right.

Our police force sucks because our mayor pushed to defund the police. Thats on the Mayor President. The fire departments in EBR Parish are legit, well compensated, and do a hell of a job. Both entities deserve more general funding. The consolidated government doesn't deserve any more money...they squander every penny BR gets.
