I have a few European friends, all of them this year are moaning about the lack of A/C. One couple don't have it in their home and when my wife video calls they look miserable and tired.

This summer has been cooler than last year. We went to the lake festival in town 2 weeks ago on a cloudy day and you needed a jacket. Went again last weekend on a sunny day and it was a perfect 88 degrees.

Yesterday was the first day this year I’ve turned on the AC in my office.

I’ll take this everytime over a Houston summer with central air.

2024 was perhaps the hottest on record. 2025 is on pace to be the 2nd or 3rd hottest.

The stinking Euros want A/C

In the U.S., 90% of households have AC. In Europe? Just 20% on average.

Why are you linking me a WSJ article? I live in Northern Europe. I’ve also lived in Houston and SLA. I’ll take my Northern European summer without central air over a SETX or SLA summer with central air every single time.

I just don’t understand why these developed countries don’t have A/C

England’s far enough north that they don’t normally need it until they do.

France has fewer excuses since heatwaves there have had massive death tolls.

Know plenty of ppl that have deployed to every area of the middle east.... And they said fricking Shreveport in August was the hottest place they had ever been.

As for euros, half of them (especially Italians) think A/C will kill you... Literally. They all think A/C will give you pneumonia and you'll die. These ppl also wear coats when it's 85 degrees.

Is this them saying it’s heating like the other poster with all the newspaper headlines or them saying it goes from cold to hot seasons the quickest?

They should quit being pussies, I work outside more than 50% of the time. I also have to do alot outside that isn't related to work. It's worse her than in the UK from March to October. The other months are either okay or just flat out cold.

Brits don't like the heat. Worked a UAV test in Hondo, Texas back in the 1990's. It was hot, but nothing a Alabama boy has not experienced.

Had 2 Brits that came in to piggy back while we were testing, mid August. Those Brits bitched the whole time they were there about how bloody hot it was.

The Brits did not make it better for us by having an aversion to soap and deodorant. Those bastard smelled worse that a two day old bag of Krystal hamburgers.

If you look at a globe, and follow the horizontal longitude, England is as north as Canada, only with a climate closer to the state of Washington (of which only 30% of households have central a/c). So it's somewhat understandable.

Still, only 5% in the UK is outrageous. I may be spoiled by Southern US a/c culture, but I need to feel 72 degrees (or colder) air palpably flowing at all times: home, car, work, restaurants, etc.

In 2023, I visited the UK in June. Scotland was wonderful. The high during the day was 72 and it got into the 60s at night. With the windows open, sleeping was wonderful.

I caught London at a good time. The high was 84, but where I stayed only got down to 74 at night. That was not as pleasant. I can only imagine how it feels during a true heat wave.

I went to Paris during December 2024, which was very intentionally planned to enjoy the winter weather!

It’s not saying much but I’ve been able to walk my dog around 6pm a few days the past week which for August in Houston is pretty good. Scattered showers have made for a pleasant summer so far

Front day still can’t come soon enough

Its humid in London. A humid 84 degrees with no air conditioning is miserable.

It gets in the upper 90s here on the gulf coast, but we have a reprieve from the heat any time we want just by stepping inside with the cool A/C. They have no reprieve. They have no A/C. Even 84 sucks when there is no escape from the heat.

I'm sure Norther Europe climate is better than Houston but what some fool in Bergen is experiencing is not proof that Europeans as a whole are not experiencing a heat wave nor that they are clamoring for A/C. As a whole the heat is going to have an impact on productivity.

Substantially more people in Europe die from heat illness every year than people murdered by another person with a gun in the US. Like in the magnitude of 5x. This doesn’t count legal shootings and suicides (which would make the two figures much closer). Still a wild statistic.

Do you have any idea how much further north Europe is than the US?
Rome, which is near the bottom of the continent is the same latitude as Chicago.
