The funny thing about the Louisiana school closures today…

…It’s going to be colder on Monday than it was this morning, but schools will be open. Crazy!
I think our weather forecasters have mastered scaring the public to the point we close school on nice days too often.
And thus the schools err on the side of caution so that we end up with kids at home on nice days (while parents have to work and teach virtual school). But then later, after some reflection, they overcompensate to the other extreme and try to reopen or remain open when bad weather does arrive (my kids school tried to reopen too soon after Ida hit and had to backtrack when it became clear staff and students were unavailable).
Rant over.
ETA: For those debating that it will be warmer on Monday morning, I’m referring to the morning low that happens right before sunrise. That shows up as the overnight low temperature on Sunday on your app.

They closed schools because it is too cold???

These school cancellations were the best in college. Just a free pass to go out drinking.

I understand the frustration.
However, one kid injured in an accident because of icy conditions, the school system is sued.

They've been having staffing issues since the holiday break. Extreme weather days exasperate that problem. Knowing that they have some extra school days built into the schedule, and being more than half-way finished with the school year, it was easy to call it.

The news media scaring the public on purpose?!?! Noooo, they wouldn’t do that!

Simply tell those families to send their child only if they feel safe enough to come in. Otherwise, stay home. I would wager most parents will brave the streets.
Believe me, the rainy commute this past Thursday morning in BTR was way worse than any potential Friday morning ice. Traffic was bad and roads were slick! Are we going to sue the schools for every time it rains in Louisiana? How on earth do the northern states remain open???

Attorneys are scum. If we used their brain power to invent instead of this crap we be in a better place as a society. And I’m an attorney.

For the amount of money I pay to private school, because the public system is absolute shite, those frickers can afford a lawsuit.
Between covid and soft arse parents, the schools basically have a blank check to cancel the school for any reason.
I have seriously considered sending a letter asking for a prorated refund after shite like this.

Nah. You have liability concerns to thank for that.

I am looking at the Weather Channel App RIGHT NOW and it says 30°F on Monday morning.
Get over yourself Boat.

My kid's school was open today. They look smarter than most others. It wasn't even that cold this morning.

St Charles Parish still had school. My wife saw on the FB page people bitching about how unsafe that was. I'm losing hope by the day.

That doesn't change the point though that if something did happen, every parent with a kid on a bus would sue like crazy.

It wasn't about the cold, it was because of the chance of ice. Even though it was a small chance.
