Many parents would place one alcoholic drink of their choice in the child’s basket to take to school. Often half a litre of wine, cider, or beer depending on the region. Where there were cases of head teachers disallowing the drink be given to children, it’s said that some parents encouraged the children to drink their wine before they go to school, over breakfast.

Alcohol has been part of mankind since we discovered it.

Why not teach them responsibility growing up instead of teetotaling and then being aghast when they treat it like a taboo once they are out of our supervision?

Young children having a glass of wine with dinner is actually not that uncommon in Europe.

Because that would require actual parenting and mentorship instead of blanket rules that completely go out the window when adulthood is reached.

I know some German companies allot a beer or two during work hours for employees. Sure would help workplace cohesiveness.

It’s more than that for laborers. I thought it was a beer/hr.

Goddamn puritans.

An ideal society is one where actual bad behavior is punished, not communal punishment for possible violations.

Their children are as mature as American college students so it seems fair.

My parents let me have a glass of wine at dinner on Christmas when I was a kid (10 and older). I turned out okay.

Right before school is when you need a drink most. Takes the edge off.

idk if you are joking or not (doesnt matter), but thinking back on it, Idk what I woulda been like as a 10 year old with a glass of wine before school. A glass of wine now doesnt really do much for me compared to a bottle, but I assume a 10 year old drinking a glass of wine would be close to making them a little too loose. Shittt my mom drinks a glass of wine and is tipsy....

With all this said, idgaf....

I live in Germany and many kids are given alchohol in small amounts and nothing is wrong with it. It is better than people where I am from getting totally wasted in front of their children ,but then turning around telling them not to do it. They tend to teach kids to drink responsibly here more than South Louisiana from what I have observed.

Well I've read that it can be pretty damaging to their developing brain. Then again, this could be brought to us by the same scientists that found marijuana makes you rape people.

Fundamentalists' strict prohibitions on alcohol cause a lot of substance abuse problems. Forbidden fruit.
