Yes. Removing access except to the privileged few is the logical way to go.
I believe that people have choices. If they can't afford to move a whole hour away for school, then they can do two years at the local cc then transfer to one of the remaining 4-year schools. You disagree?

They also have one of the top nursing programs in the country.
It isn't even the top nursing program in the state.

There is a racial element that would need to be addressed for that though.
In my experience SUNO staying open is really an excuse to spend money to keep a certain segment of the population open. I mean their graduation rate is like 8% and they basically have open admissions. How much money is being wasted here?

NLU is the only other school in LA with a D1 football national championship other than LSU.
I'm pretty sure LaTech won a couple in the lat 70's early 80's before D2 became 1-AA.

The curriculum needs to cut to simply offer courses that can be concretely tied to a job when you get out and overAll a college debris program should be cut to 3 years and the electives cut out.
All these universities are fat and need to be downsized and duplication and non necessary classes and programs cut.

Very much. Especially if they are dependant on TOPS.

When and who overtook them?

LSU Shreveport
UL Monroe
Nope. Replace those two on your list with Grambling and Southern

Southern Shreveport and LSU Eunice are already two-year schools. No reason to shut them down.
No need for them. SS students could go to BPCC and LSUE students could go to SLCC.

quote:If you want totally scorched earth draconian, I'll go along -- w/these conditions:
One flagship (LSU).
One 4-year university in the North (merge ULM into Tech, campus in Ruston)
One 4-year university in the South (I don't care, but ULL makes sense)
One 4 year school in New Orleans (merge UNO and SUNO).
All other campuses convert to junior college.
Keep McNeese instead of ULL for the SW sector
Keep a very scaled down commuter school LSUS
Keep LSUA for cenla
Well, that was easy

Offer correspondence courses at the smaller colleges
Community colleges already exist for this.

Southern New Orleans
SUNO shouldn't exist.

Well maybe not too much for UNO but for LaTech...hahahah good luck.
Yeah most UNO guys I know worked their way through school (not a criticism). I never really got the impression that Tech was a commuter school.

So no public university in the 3rd largest city.
Actually the Lafayette metro has surpassed the Shreveport metro in population.

You can't do that and stay accredited. Higher education isn't only about getting a job, but also being educated in general, thinking skills, etc.

Yes, closing down a university with enrollment of 20,000 in the state's third largest metro in favor of McNeese makes a lot of sense.

Also doesn't make sense given the access to McNeese, Nichols, and LSU-A students via I-10 and I-49 that ULL has.
