42. Literally the perfect age for this discussion, as I was 10 in 1993 and 18 in 2001.

The gangsta rap stuff wasn't even typically discussed with MTV as a variable. Tapes and CDs played amongst friends was how the music spread.
Yeah, somebody let me borrow a tape of Snoop's first album in middle school. Warren G's G Funk Era, too.
MTV was banned in our house at that time, FWIW (not due to rap).

Gaucho, Just out of curiosity, how old are you (approximately)?

I can only imagine what the funeral procession will look like

99% of the white guys who pretended to like rap music in the 90s (and still pretend today) did it because they thought it made them look tough and hard. They ran out and bought their gold grills from the gas station and big gold chains at Spencer's gifts.
The same losers who always paid for everything, always drove and will tell you they have black friends. Completely unaware.

MTV told generations of youth they should be into this rap crap or they're racists.
Not true at all. Rap wasn't shown on MTV in the early days. Only Prince and MJ were the black artists in MTV. It wasn't until the Ggunk era that MTV started playing a lot of rap videos. 12 years after the rise of rap.

I started listening to rap music in the 1980s. I was a 115 lb white kid. My first show without a family member present was Run DMC, FAT Boys and Grandmaster flash. I assure you I wasn't listening to it because I was trying to look "tough" or "hard". I think there weren't more that a couple dozen white people in the 20k seat arena where I saw them....
I starred listening to it because Run DMC dropped "Rock box" with a :heavy metal" guitar riff. Then I kept listening to it because of the sampling of 60s and 70s Soul/R&B/Disco songs.
What you said about the 90s might be true. But hip hop started before then.
(And honestly, the same thing could be said about almost every musical movement since the 1950s. Rock, blues, jazz, punk, metal, industrial, grunge, core, etc. Most people connect with music because it speaks to them, not because it fits an image....)

Nailed it.

The reason you unironically like shitty rap music is because you were a sheltered homeschool kid who hated your parents for making you go to church and you thought it was cool when you saw black people cussing

The fact you even know what "Ggunk " is makes my point. You wouldn't if it hadn't been racially profiled and showed down generations' throats passing as music.
Posted on 1/31/26 at 8:31 am to el Gaucho
And you didn't answer my question.
How old are you?
I'm simply asking because I'm old enough to remember a time before hip hop/Rap.

Again, I was given a tape of Warren G's album, without watching MTV
