My mom always railed against Harry Potter saying it was sacreligious when it’s drawing on archetypes.

More late 90's, but we had religious relatives who would cover their kids ears when our kids would talk about Harry Potter at the dinner table.

What was it with that time period and how everything had to be spooky spiritual?

Baby Boomer parents and ex-hippies going overboard with everything as per the norm. I will say that the music I listened to as a teenager in the 80's was shocking to my parents being as they grew up with Elvis and the Everly Brothers.

I had an evangelical friend who couldn't watch Harry Potter. The strangest though was a Catholic friend who couldn't watch Beakman's World. I never understood that one.

I miss the hippies. We need another "turn on, tune in, drop out" era

I agree Roger. It was pretty nice growing up as a kid in the aftermath of the peace and love era. Social structures had been loosened up enough to make it a fun time to grow up.

I loved Beakman's world. Had the biggest crush ever on Alanna Ubach (Josie).

I went to the same type of church in Lafayette...most of that was happening in the 80s as well...no smurfs for me, or HE Man and a host of other things that would be labeled demonic.

Now that I am older and have kids, I am aware of what they watch and can tell when things on TV, netflex, or youtube influence their lives...I just dont label them demonic.

If you have any experience with evangelical Christianity you'll realize that Satan is a far more important figure than Jesus to them. I mean it isn't even really arguable

It wasn’t the time period. It was where you attended church

My wife had the same thing with Smurfs growing up.

Never got to carve a pumpkin either.

She was so dainty trying to get the strands and seeds out. It was amusing.

Depends on the denomination.
