Taking selfies with wild bears. In the age of smartphones and social media, photo snafus in National Parks are increasingly common. Last year during the annual salmon run near Lake Tahoe, rangers repeatedly had to warn visitors to stop taking selfies with bears. The issue has become such a problem that officials have threatened to close the area to tourists.

Rangers had even found people taking selfies with a bear cub whose mother was fishing just a few feet away, said Gay Eitel of the nearby Taylor Creek Visitor Center in an interview with Bancroft Media. “It could end very badly indeed,” she said. “We had one person say to us, ‘It’s OK, it’s a black bear, they don’t attack people.’ Needless to say, this isn’t true.”

Hand-feeding skunks. Considering how famous skunks are for their foul-smelling spray, would anybody dare to go close enough to feed them? Apparently so. Meet the National Parks skunk aficionados. Burnett has seen (and smelled) the aftermath of a skunk attack on tourists firsthand. “The results can be very unpleasant if the animal becomes agitated,” he says with characteristic understatement. No matter how many warnings rangers have posted, the likelihood of being sprayed doesn’t stop some visitors from trying to befriend the skunks. Burnett attributes this to the fact that skunks can seem “irresistibly cute.”

Feels like there should be at least one picture in this thread. I'll go out on a limb and say it should probably be of the selfie variety.

That's bullshite. Some park ranger made up this story because they have nothing to do...because they are park rangers.

Where are all these bear selfies??

I have not seen a single selfie pic of a bear. If it was so rampant, you would think the article could provide a pic.

I have a feeling that if the Rangers do not intervene, this problem will take care of itself. I am pulling for the Bears...

Good luck, their defense is horrible. And they still have Cutler at qb, look for another letdown

I know I am!
Go ahead and take your selfie, just don't call the Rangers when your dumb arse is being eaten.

Not gonna lie, that last picture where the bear is looking at the camera is pretty good.

National Parks are the perfect place for Darwin Awards to play out.

I'm surprised more aren't killed by animals or elements.

I don't see what the problem is. Would I or any normal person do this, no, but if they want to take a picture w/ a wild arse bear, then go for it.

Or better yet, we should just ban taking selfies. The govt will make more money this way.

They maul people all the time in September. It's only when they get into the meat of the SEC schedule that they aren't so tough.

Those people are nuts.

We have not infrequent interactions with black bears were I live but I would never turn my back to them ti get a selfie.

We have take pics but always from inside the house or at a safe distance.
