Not the best analogy. Teacher is a profession, not a title. A retired teacher with an expired license wouldn’t go around calling themselves a teacher.
A retired medical doctor whose license has expired would very likely still use the title “Doctor.”
And while the board doesn’t need another debate on this topic, it is customary for someone with a PhD to be referred to with the honorary “Doctor” title. So in the case, his licensure or lack there of doesn’t change his title.
“Phil, PhD” doesn’t have the same ring to it.

I think Dr Phil, and Dr Oz are spinoffs from Oprah. Rachel Ray maybe also.
