The dog racing "mecca" of Florida ran its final greyhound contests Thursday night as the gambling mainstay strides closer to its potential demise across America.

quote:

Man's best friend ran one last time at Palm Beach Kennel Club on New Year's Eve, more than two years after state voters axed the sport.

quote:

The clock struck midnight when a speedy pooch named Bug Brush crossed the finish line to win the final race at Palm Beach Kennel Club in West Palm Beach and brought a curtain on the sport in Florida.

A little more than 25 months ago, state voters overwhelmingly approved Amendment 13, outlawing greyhound races, starting in 2021, and issuing what could amount to a national death sentence for the century-old U.S. sport.

With the state now out of the greyhound-running business, four tracks in three states — West Virginia, Arkansas and Iowa — are left still chasing rabbits.

I didn't know Greyhound racing was fading out.

One of my favorite vacations way back in the day when my wife and I were first starting out was a trip to Mobile where we went to the Greyhound races and to Bellingrath Gardens. We had no idea what we were doing and got put in less than stellar seats for the dinner/racing because I didn't realize the practice there was to slip some money to the maitre'd but we had a great time. We bet on the dogs that relieved themselves before the race, guessing that would make them run a bit faster and actually came out ahead.

Is racing dogs a no no now? Greyhounds were bred to run fast, seems cruel to have one and not have it running a good bit.

If it had no other cultural significance, dog racing at least produced a classic Odd Couple episode:

Horse racing thinks this won’t happen to them, but they are next on the list

Certain idiots have given peta a seat at the table and now it’s only a matter of time.

They are both many years removed from track life

But horse racing really should have joined dog racing in the fight.

It’s not just PETA. It’s tougher to recruit new blood in to the racing industry, especially youth. I don’t know how long it will take to turn people against horse racing, but I agree it will happen. As for PETA, they’re typical leftists. They don’t compromise and they don’t acquiesce.

The track wasn't far from our home office in W Palm Beach. President of the company was friends with the Rooneys. We would sometimes entertain out of town clients for dinner, drinks and betting. We would give them each $100 cash for betting. The good ole days.

Arabs love their camel races. Seriously, every time I have gone to Evangeline Downs, there are camel races going on and they are on TV and there is always a small group of people around the TV cheering and yelling and I always think "how much of a degenerate do you have to be to bet on camel racing.. in South Louisiana".
