At many Healthcare facilities (and corporate America ) it's who you know not what you know. This is not limited to minorities, this goes for everyone.

Maybe it's because their advanced degrees are from places like Southern. Or maybe it's because some of them just aren't cut out for management roles. Maybe some of them just fricking suck.

Nah, must just be racism.

From what I gathered a lot of nurses hate black people. This is of no concern to us as we are white.

Let's leave this shite thread and go bask in our privilege somewhere nicer.

Since it's Blue Cross, presumably they're working in some kind of administrative role. I'm sure there are plenty of openings for nurses doing actual patient care.

Typical, someone does not get the promotion they want and instead of looking at what they can do better (show up to work on time, dont bitch about assignments, take on additional tasks, be polite and courteous, show leadership qualities, don't stir shite (aka facebook drama like this)and overall just being a good employee)they blame it on the color of their skin, their sex, their age or something else they can not change.

Incredibly well put and concise. I've said the same many times in the white privilege threads and people cannot seem to their head around it. Almost 80% (79.8%) of the employed workforce in this country in 2014 are white. 11% are black. You're going to find it difficult to move up when you don't socialize with the majority of people in the labor force. You're going to find it difficult to socialize with the majority of the labor force when you don't look like them.

The sheer numbers of white people are difficult to overcome. Has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with human nature.

This is a known fact. Additionally, so do restaurant people.

Yep. People should work backwards. If you know you're going to have some built-in excuse as to why you were passed up - whether it be race (white included), sex, age, religion, etc. - then it is up to you to make sure it isn't close enough for that to be considered.

I liken it to coaching at the high school or lower level. People love to blame the lack of playing time for their kid on the "favorites", and they're not wrong. Coaches certainly have their favorites, and IF things are close, that guy or girl will get the benefit of the doubt. It is your job as a player to make sure it isn't close. Don't give the bias a chance to even creep into the decision.

Healthcare middle management is cut throat as hell. I've only worked for one manager who held her ER Director position for about 12 years. She is the extreme outlier. For everyone else it is less than 5 years. And the Director I mentioned was "retired".

You have to know how to play the game, and there are two games being played. Patient care and administrative. The two can not mix. In addition, every 5 years all the higher ups above you have changed, so the rules must be relearned.

I've been offered once but did not, and NEVER will, take a management position. These positions are like coaching. If you haven't been fired, you haven't been doing it long enough. Also, if you get in the door and are not on the way up, you are on the way out. You just may not know it yet.

This is healthcare admin within the insurance side of the industry. That's like trying to play by American football rules with people who are playing rugby, and speaking Portugeuse.
