The disconnect between what we see in the news and the reality of the world around us.

Bill gates tweeted it this morning, and its really fascinating how fear revolves around our lives.
Thought I'd share.
Thought I'd share.

The crazy one to me is homicide, it's even less than the 0.01% that is terrorism.

I’d rather hear about how isis is gonna kill me than hear how my beloved $5 Big box from Popeyes is.
Sorry.
Sorry.

I always get a good laugh when people from other countries tell Americans they are brainwashed by the media and don't know truly what's going on. You think Germany is just 100% honest in what they say in their media?

Are you doing an experiment to see if people would respond different to the same thread if it wasn't started by me?

I mean, what news reports on and what people google search doesn't really have to correlate with how people die.

It's not the inordinate amounts of coverage those things get that surprises me.
What surprises me about those graphs is how closely the NYT and The Guardian distributions reflect one another.
Does the original source specify if that's the Guardian's UK coverage? Or if that's the distribution of their US news stories? Graph doesn't specify.

The News is meant for people to come home from a shitty day at work and see how shitty other peoples lives are. Aka Murders, terrorism, break ins.
Nobody would watch if they covered all the people dying of heart disease, while 70% of Americans are obese and 30% have diabetes and hypertension

I guess Bill has never read the crime section of The Advocate. We are appropriately fearful.

We are wired to notice the outlier. Just the way human beings are. Violence is an outlier in today’s society, especially compared to 100 years ago and very especially compared to 1,000 years ago.
This isn’t just an American thing, and some other places are way worse.

The only purpose of the incessant fear mongering from the media is to mold public perception for the benefit of those at the top of the food chain politically, economically and socially.
