I keep using that defense because that's all there is, it was shut down or potentially risk millions of lives. Because there was no data they didn't know if the preventive measures would have been enough. We didn't really have time to gather the data & if you wait months and months to gather data without being shut down the virus continues to spread quickly. And while our leaders are trying to decide what to do, Italy was getting ugly and China was beginning to wind down the worst of it from locking down. Yes China is full of shite and they have been from the beginning, but that was about all we had to go on. It seemed like the right choice given the circumstances.

Broken clock is right twice a day right?

Most of my thoughts tend to fall a little left of center so I don't expect them to be readily applauded here.

I try to keep an open mind. I listen to both right-leaning and left-leaning podcasts to get my news and to hear opinions.

We will have to disagree as to that being justification for our choices.

I just see it as being rash and emotional.

I am fine with agree to disagree

I will also say I'm just an IT nerd, and I don't know jack about viruses or how to deal with them. Literally all of my opinion comes from reading online and podcasts, so nobody should taking anything I say very seriously. Just the opinions and ramblings of an ordinary person

Bruh, it’s 2020. You’re either a soyboy libtard or a qtard trumpkin. You have to choose. Just like you have to decide whether you think COVID is the apocalypse or the sniffles. Joe Brady was either the offensive coordinator or a water boy.

There’s no room in this great nation for cowards who think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Get with the program or get out.

This is the right answer - personal responsibility. You have to take responsibility for the decisions you make; if you want to put yourself and your family at greater risk, so be it. By the same token, you shouldn’t be allowed to put others at greater risk due to your decisions. There are doctors and nurses that have contracted this disease while doing their jobs. If you contract the disease while the medical professionals advised you to stay home and you chose to ignore their advice, take personal responsibility and don’t go to the hospital no matter how bad it gets. Take personal responsibility and don’t increase the medical professionals chances of getting the disease even one iota. I’m all for it, but make sure you truly live the creed. Don’t change your tune if you’re suddenly the one in need. It’s all about personal responsibility.

In the past two months of this shite, this may very well be the dumbest answer and useless form of logic I’ve yet to run across on this board. Obviously you don’t realize that those medical professionals chose to pursue personal responsibility and decided upon a career in healthcare? It’s what THEY have trained & chosen to do. Under your rationale of thinking they would all be unemployed because the greater part of humanity would have exercised such personal responsibility. Hell let’s get rid of the police, fire depts, EMS, sanitation, etc. just think of all the money we could save in taxes alone if we all exhibited personal responsibility. Do you live in the REAL world? People get sick, people have accidents, people have chronic pain and suffering and sometimes it’s due to their own negligence and other times through no fault of their own.

That's an opinion. There's a huge spectrum in between in which a better solution lies.

We took the extreme measure based on results from a couple of countries with aging populations and poor health care capacity. We really haven't come close to pushing national health care capacity.

As I said earlier there were plenty of other options but we had no data to know that it would be effective. Could have tried it? Yes, of course, but if it failed and the virus ran rampant we'd all be calling for their heads and wondering why we didn't lock down.

Xtreme shutdowns were about power and federal money. Outside of a couple of hotspots they were unnecessary.

Lots of federal money flowing in, lots of political aspirations on the line.

There were some shutdowns during the Spanish flu but not like this. Only during the viral panic of the social media age was this a possibility.

Humans don't live life like this. We adapt, fight on the margins.

The main lay person proponents of long term shutdown are people who never lost economic momentum and people making more on UI than working.

Amazing how dug in the Karens of the OT are. They will not admit the overreaction is causing more damage than the illness.

Remember all those nurses and disease experts who posted here a month ago?

Where are they now? Hiding.

Tik tok bitches

This is something many seem to forget.

There are literally $3 trillion reasons for governors, politicians, and industry leaders to want the shutdown to continue.

$2 trillion of that went directly to American citizens. Meaning people have to use it to buy things and pay sales tax before it makes it into state/local coffers.

I’m not naive - I’m sure the federal assistance, including likely future packages, make it easier for governors to keep things shut down. But I find it hard to believe that the federal money will ever completely offset the lost revenue from shutdowns.

Our government is using it directly to replace lost revenue. Over a billion dollars worth.

No one said it was.

The hype/hysteria has turned into political propaganda.

It's amazing you guys manage to continue to push the narrative that it's all the media and liberals causing the shutdowns. The media hype plays a role, sure, but the entire fricking world is shutting down because of this virus. It isn't MUH LIBS.

The US media plays a huge role world wide. There have been serious pandemics every few years since I’ve been alive but suddenly in an election cycle year THIS pandemic is the one that causes the world to shut down, none of the other ones. Please stop pretending our media doesn’t determine the worldwide response.
